Fears for Mitch McConnell, 84, increase after 47 missed votes… and no sighting of the hospitalized Republican

A fall at his DC residence on June 14 - more than 50 days ago - left him briefly unconscious, according to a written statement he released last month. But he still has not been seen in public or released a video of any kind.  The Kentucky Republican also has not recorded a Senate vote since June 11, bringing his tally of consecutively missed roll call votes to a staggering 47, according to GovTrack.US, though he has remotely cosponsored some legislation. 'Where's Mitch, day 51?' right-wing influencer Catturd asked in a Tuesday X post. 'The voters have a right to know.' Conservative media personality Tomi Lahren said on her podcast on Monday that she was concerned for McConnell's health and criticized Republicans for not applying the same scrutiny to him that they did to former President Joe Biden in previous years. It is not clear whether there is a modern precedent for such a prolonged absence in the Senate, though GOP Representative Tom Kean of New Jersey missed over 140 consecutive votes earlier this year in an absence he attributed to depression. The Senator's email statements have included photos of himself smiling with his wife, former Cabinet Secretary Elaine Chao, but many voters are not satisfied that he is recovering. Neither has quieted speculation that his condition might be worse than reported The lack of a recorded video statement from McConnell has fueled speculation that the photos are outdated, AI-generated, or otherwise deceptive. The Senator's staffers have in recent weeks repeatedly ignored questions about the situation from independent DC journalists like Nicholas Ballasy and Desiree Townsend. McConnell's office did not respond to the Daily Mail's request for comment on this article.  His latest update, an email on July 27, said he was undergoing 'intense physical therapy' in a rehab facility, but hoped to be back to normal duties soon. Multiple Republican Senators, as well as conservative CNN host Scott Jennings, said early last month that they had spoken to McConnell on the phone. Senator Shelley Moore Capito, another Republican, said later in July that she had talked to a person who had visited a 'clear-minded' McConnell at his rehab facility. The 84-year-old Senator has faced health concerns for years, including after two instances in 2023 - three years ago - in which he stopped talking and appeared to freeze up while talking to the media. McConnell, who had polio as a child, is supported by staffers inside the US Capitol in early June His childhood case of polio has affected his mobility, perhaps contributing to his occasional wheelchair trips around the Capitol as well as to his June fall.  Andy Beshear, the Democratic Governor of McConnell's state, has publicly called on the aged Senator either to demonstrate his ability to serve with a direct, verbal message, or to resign so that a replacement could be appointed. In most states, governors are empowered to immediately replace senators who are unable to finish out their terms, as happened in South Carolina after Senator Lindsey Graham's recent death. But in Kentucky, the state legislature has shifted the replacement process into an expedited special election, a move that could lead to a legal challenge from the governor's camp if McConnell were to step down early. McConnell, who is younger than only Chuck Grassley and Bernie Sanders in the Senate, announced last year that he would retire after his current term, which ends in January.
