'Extremely dangerous' snapper turtle spotted in Welsh beauty spot as locals urged to back away
A snapping turtle described as "extremely dangerous" was discovered in the waters of a popular Welsh woodland, prompting staff to issue an urgent alert to visitors.
Penllergare Valley Woods in Swansea released a warning yesterday after the creature was spotted swimming in the area.
The conservation team at the beauty spot immediately began working on a strategy to safely capture the animal.
Visitors were told to stay out of the water and ensure their dogs remained on dry land.
The woodland issued a statement reading: "Urgent warning. Please do not enter the water, and keep dogs out too. A snapping turtle has been seen in the water at Penllergare."
Staff believed the turtle was likely concealing itself near the waterfall, seeking warmth in that location.
The conservation team looked for expert guidance as they developed their approach to safely apprehend the reptile.
A statement from the woodland explained: "Our conservation team is working on a plan to capture it safely alongside expert advice, as it is keeping itself hidden to stay warm (we think it's likely to be at the waterfall)."

The creature's tendency to keep itself hidden made the capture operation more challenging for those involved.
Specialists were brought in to help with the species, which is not typically found in British waters.
The team proceeded with caution, given the potential dangers involved in handling such an animal.
The woodland's warning emphasised the significant threat posed by these reptiles, which possess extremely strong biting capabilities.

The operation concluded successfully, with the turtle safely retrieved from the woodland waters.
In a follow-up announcement, Penllergare Valley Woods confirmed the positive outcome, stating: "The turtle has been rescued. After a bit of a 'shell-shock', he is recovering well after his brief stay with us. Thank you to everyone for your help and cooperation."
The reptile is now being cared for following its capture, with staff reporting it is in good health despite the ordeal.
It remains unclear how the snapping turtle came to be in the Welsh beauty spot, although such creatures are sometimes abandoned by owners who can no longer care for them.
