Ex-Premier League star and family 'threatened with knife' during terrifying burglary

Former Southampton defender Jan Bednarek was threatened by a burglar with a knife during a terrifying incident on Friday night. Bednarek helped Porto win the league title last weekend, but his celebrations were brought to an abrupt end when his home was invaded. The 30-year-old scored the winning goal as Porto beat Alverca 1-0 last weekend to clinch their first title in four years. He has been on a high this week, celebrating the achievement, only for that feeling to be punctured. Portuguese newspaper Record reports that Bednarek and his family returned home at around 9.30pm on Friday night to discover somebody inside their house. Bednarek was then reportedly threatened with a knife by the assailant, who got away with around €150,000 (£129,000) worth of items. The Poland international and his wife, who share a young daughter, had earlier been out at an art exhibition. He made 254 appearances for Saints and has been a revelation for his new side. The centre-back has made 48 appearances for Porto this season, scoring four goals, and partnering his international team-mate Jakub Kiwior in defence. Kiwior left Arsenal in the summer and has been a key part of a defence which has conceded just 15 goals in 32 games and lost once domestically. Porto have been led to the title by 37-year-old Italian coach Francesco Farioli and ex-Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas, who is club president. "It's very emotional, I'm very happy for everyone," Farioli said after the 1-0 win over Alverca last weekend. "For this group, for the group of people who work here, for Jorge Costa, for the president, for the people who are here... Everyone deserved a title like this after a long time without one." Bednarek won't be looking forward to the World Cup this summer after Poland failed to qualify for the 48-team tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada. Poland were beaten 3-2 by Sweden in a play-off for the tournament, with Viktor Gyokeres scoring a dramatic late winner.
