England World Cup squad 'leaked' as Thomas Tuchel gives trio shock chance

Thomas Tuchel is set to give call-ups to Danny Welbeck , Luke Shaw and Jarrad Branthwaite in his provisional England squad for the World Cup . The Three Lions boss has to submit a squad of up to 55 to FIFA by close of play on Monday night. According to The Telegraph , Welbeck, Shaw and Branthwaite are three shock names included in the first pool of players. The former’s last call-up to the England squad came back in 2018, when he started the 1-0 win over Switzerland at Leicester City’s King Power Stadium. Tuchel is searching for a backup option upfront to captain Harry Kane ahead of the tournament. Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke has been ruled out due to injury, with Aston Villa ’s Ollie Watkins looking the most likely option - while Ivan Toney is a wildcard pick that Tuchel could turn to - according to Mirror chief football writer John Cross. Welbeck has continued to impress for Brighton and Hove Albion. In his 35 Premier League appearances this season, he has scored 13 goals. JOIN US ON FACEBOOK! Latest news, analysis and much more on Mirror Football's Facebook page Speaking about a potential call-up for Welbeck back in October , Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler said: “I asked a question to the squad, if they think Danny Welbeck can play for England and they all agreed. “So that was the only time we mentioned it and let's see what happens. I think, yes. “I'm very convinced from my players and I have the big belief that Danny Welbeck is able to play for England. But I always try to emphasise that England has a great coach and he can will make the right decisions.” Shaw’s last appearance for England came in the Euro 2024 final against Spain. The left-back has been a regular for Manchester United this season and could force his way back into the Three Lions reckoning. Defender Branthwaite has just one international cap for England, with that coming as a second-half substitute in the friendly against Bosnia back in June 2024. The centre-back has missed a lot of this season with a hamstring injury, but has been a regular for Everton when fit and available. After submitting his original 55-man squad, Tuchel won’t have too long to cut that down to 26 for the tournament. The final squad will be picked on May 22nd. England will then play two warm-up friendlies against New Zealand (6 June) and Costa Rica (10 June). Their World Cup campaign begins with the first group game against Croatia on 17 June (9pm kick-off).
