England fans have been issued with an urgent warning ahead of the Three Lions' World Cup knockout game in the early hours of Monday morning.

Thomas Tuchel's side is set to face Mexico at the world-famous Estadio Azteca in Mexico City at 1am on Monday morning, provided thunderstorms do not force any delays or time changes.

Tens of millions of people across the country are set to watch the World Cup game, with many likely heading to the pub, after the Government confirmed that they can open until 5am.

However, road safety experts are urging football fans to ensure they are well-rested and avoid drinking before driving, or they could face serious consequences.

Rod Dennis, RAC road safety spokesperson, said the organisation was "concerned" about a spike in "avoidable collisions" on Monday, urging fans to put safety first.

He told drivers to be "fully rested and hydrated" if they plan to stay up and watch England in the early hours of the morning.

The expert suggested that they may not be in a fit state to be behind the wheel until "much later in the day".

"Those who have consumed alcohol while watching the match shouldn't get behind the wheel until they're absolutely sure it's completely out of their system," Mr Dennis said.

Risks could be even greater with another impending wave of heat, which he warned would "only amplify the effects of tiredness and slow people recovering".

Mr Dennis added: "Tiredness, dehydration and alcohol can be a lethal combination behind the wheel."

This has been reiterated by many road safety experts as England prepares to play the latest game in the World Cup tournament so far.

The England game is expected to finish at 3am, or potentially 4am if it goes to extra time and penalties, likely leaving millions of Britons sleep-deprived.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

England's World Cup last-16 clash with Mexico could face major disruption if severe thunderstorms hit Mexico City, with FIFA facing a difficult decision should the match prove impossible to complete

Data from the AA shows that a person who has been awake for 24 hours may have an impairment equivalent to a blood alcohol level of 0.1 per cent - over the drink driving limit.

This can impact reaction times, decision-making abilities and vigilance, making them a more dangerous driver if they choose to operate a vehicle in that state.

AA Accident Assist is advising motorists to stop driving at the first sign of tiredness, park in a safe space and drink two cups of coffee or another caffeinated drink.

The AA has called for England fans to consider delaying journeys if they feel tired, as well as advocating for the use of lifts and public transport.

England will play against Mexico in the last 16

Tim Rankin, managing director of AA Accident Assist, said England's game against Mexico would capture the nation's attention, but said tired drivers could cause issues.

He continued, saying: "If supporters are staying up until nearly three o'clock to watch the game, or even four o'clock if the match goes to extra time and penalties, they need to think carefully about how they'll get through Monday morning safely.

"Drowsy driving is an underestimated risk on our roads. Just like drink driving, tiredness affects your reactions, judgement and concentration, yet many people still underestimate how dangerous it can be.

"If you're too tired to drive safely, don't get behind the wheel. Delay your journey if you can or wait until you've had enough sleep. No football match is worth risking your life for, let alone anyone else's."
