Alanında uzman personel tarafından 6 hafta süren 240 saatlik eğitimde kursiyerlere temel gemicilik, deniz emniyeti, gemi güvenlik, deniz polisinin görev ve sorumlulukları, harita, makine elektrik, deniz hukuku, gemi seyri, meteoroloji ve benzeri eğitimler verildi. Teorik eğitimin ardından Emniyet Genel Müdürlüğü tarafından tahsis edilen 7 farklı tipteki botla Karadeniz'de uygulama aşamasına geçen polis memurları, yanaşma, ayrılma, halat bağlama ve demirleme teknikleri, su altı arama faaliyetleri, deniz üzerinde tıbbi tahliye ve gemi kontrol operasyonları yaptı. Adaylar basit makine bakım-onarımı ile karina (gemilerin veya teknelerin su hattının altında kalan, deniz suyuyla temas eden dış gövde bölümü) temizliği, fiziksel yeterlilik için ise kara ile havuz sporları eğitimleri aldı. Eğitimin sonunda sınava tabi tutulacak polis memurları, başarılı oldukları takdirde "gemi adamı" ünvanına sahip olacak. İl Emniyet Müdürlüğü Deniz Limanı Şube Müdür Vekili Emniyet Amiri Saniye Şahin, AA muhabirine, deniz polisinin 1857 yılında İstanbul'da beşinci şube olarak kurulduğunu söyledi. Köklü geçmişe sahip teşkilatın göllerde, denizlerde, iç sularda ve sahil şeridinde, 24 saat esasına göre suç ve suçluyla mücadele ettiğini belirten Şahin, "Bu zorlu ve riskli görev yerine getirilirken Emniyet Genel Müdürlüğü bünyesinde bulunan 204 adet yüksek teknolojiyle donatılmış yüksek süratli aynı zamanda çok yüksek maliyetli deniz araçları kullanılmaktadır. Bu araçlar, 468 gemi adamı tarafından sevk ve idare edilmektedir." dedi. Bu hassas görevi ifa eden deniz polisinde görevli gemi adamı branşlı personelin seçilmesi ve yetiştirilmesinin de büyük önem arz ettiğini dile getiren Şahin, şöyle devam etti: "Bu nedenle Emniyet Genel Müdürlüğü, değişik kadrolardan yüksek katılımın olduğu bir sınavda yetenek, bilgi, beceri ve donanımı yüksek 58 personel seçmiş ve bu personelin yetiştirilmesi için Çanakkale Deniz Polisi Eğitim Merkezi, Yalova, Kocaeli ve Samsun İl Emniyet Müdürlüğümüzü görevlendirmiştir. 8 Mayıs itibarıyla kursumuz sona erecektir. Bu kapsamda üstün gayret sarf ettik ve bu personelin iyi yetişmesi için elimizden gelen gayreti gösterdik." Deniz Limanı Şubesinde görevli gemi adamı komiser yardımcısı Muhammed Durkan, eğitimlerin uzman gemi adamı personelinin eğitmenliğinde gerçekleştirildiğini aktardı. Emniyet Genel Müdürlüğü Koruma Daire Başkanlığı tarafından tahsisi yapılan 7 farklı tip ve boylarda botta eğitimler verildiğini anlatan Durkan, şunları kaydetti: "Bizim amacımız da burada kurs verdiğimiz personelimizin eğitim sonunda yapacak oldukları yazılı ve uygulamalı sınavlardan geçmeleri halinde atanacakları deniz polisi birimlerinde yabancılık çekmeden profesyonel bir şekilde görevlere katılımlarını sağlamak. Ne kadar zor olduğu herkes için bilinen denizcilik mesleği ile yapması tam bir fedakarlık gerektiren polislik mesleğimizi birleştiren bu branşta 'mavi vatan'da görev alacak yeni neferleri yetiştirmek bizler için gurur verici."
