Emergency as police officer is stabbed in the neck and knifeman is shot in the leg in Elizabeth East

The female officer had been responding to reports of a man armed with a knife on Main North Road, in Elizabeth East, on Wednesday. The officer was stabbed before the allegedly armed man was shot in the leg. Acting Commissioner David O'Donovan said the officer was seriously injured and was rushed to hospital.  'The suspect as I said received a gunshot injury to the leg,' he said. 'He was also transported to hospital and is also receiving medical care. His injuries are not deemed to be life-threatening.  'He is in effective police custody and his condition will continue to be monitored and form part of the ongoing investigation.'  Dozens of police vehicles were seen on scene along with SES and Metropolitan Fire Service crews. 'My heart goes out to the police officer just trying to do their job. 'Nobody's life should be at risk for trying to help their community.'
