Its that time of the year again when the To-Do lists are endless, local markets are crowded and group chats are abuzz with Eid plans and outfit approvals. After the quiet worship of the first 9 days of Dhul Hijjah, and deep focus of the day of Arafat everyone is ready to let his or her hair down and live it up the halal way. We only get this once a year and it’s always beautiful to witness the joy and togetherness that comes with Eid al Adha. For many Muslims, it’s a time of sharing, strengthening family ties, rekindling old relationships, gratitude, and of course, feasting! If you ever find yourself celebrating Eid away from home, know that you can have a good time all the same. Understand your new environment and make the most of it by experiencing their traditions. Some societies celebrate in grand style while others like to keep it calm and family centered.

Highlighted below are some of the ways Eid is celebrated

01

Durbar
Festival

Kano, Nigeria

This 500-year-old event is an exhibition of northern Nigerian heritage and is observed twice a year, for both Eids and is characterized by exquisite horsemanship, colorful cultural attire and traditional music. This horse parade takes place over 4 days with its entourage of men parading the streets grouped as districts or families to pay homage to the Emir alongside other salutes and stunts. This festival draws huge crowds of spectators from near and far. Interested locals enjoy the show and also find time to visit family and friends.

02

Open
House

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

In Malaysia, Eid ul adha is known as Hari Raya Haji (Great day of Eid) and an open house tradition is practiced where families welcome people into their homes to share a meal. Whether they are friends, neighbors or even strangers, everyone is welcome. Children are excited to receive packets of money from family and visitors through out the day. Locals are typically dressed in the national attires known as Baju Kurung for women and Baju Melayu for the men. You will find people coming together to enjoy a popular dish called Lemang, which is made with glutinous rice and coconut milk cooked over an open fire in true communal spirit.

03

Eid
Bazaar

Yunnan province, China

In the Shadian suburb of Yunnan province, it is customary for the men to observe Eid prayers at the Shadian Grand Masjid. This grand mosque has a capacity of 15,000 people and is the biggest in China. A large bazaar outside the mosque attracts many worshippers after the prayers. Lined with rows of stalls selling flowers, delicious food, toys and balloons, shopping is a major activity, after which people head into the neighborhoods to visit family, friends or honor feast invitations.

Regardless of location, Eid around the world carries the same spirit. From the kids in Egypt and Abu Dhabi leaping for joy when they receive cash gifts or the women in Sudan and India decorating their hands and feet with intricate henna patterns to the delicious feasts hosted by families in Indonesia and Philippines. The spirit of excitement and community is something you can relate to wherever you go. Just Ensure you know the time and venue for the Eid salat, don’t assume your neighborhood mosque is also a venue or you just might find yourself scrambling for time on that precious morning!
