An Ebola outbreak in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo has killed 65 people, with health authorities reporting 246 suspected infections across the Ituri province.

The region, which shares its borders with both Uganda and South Sudan, has become the focus of intense concern among African health officials.

Preliminary laboratory analysis has raised alarm bells, suggesting the virus responsible may represent a previously unidentified strain.

The DRC's national research facility has confirmed the presence of Ebola in 13 out of 20 samples examined, according to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

Complete genetic sequencing results are anticipated within the next day.

The presence of bustling mining communities throughout the affected area has complicated efforts to contain the disease's spread.

These towns experience constant population movement, creating significant challenges for infectious disease management.

Africa CDC officials have expressed particular concern about the potential for cross-border transmission.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

In response, the continental health body convened an emergency meeting on Friday, bringing together representatives from the DRC, Uganda and South Sudan alongside the World Health Organization and pharmaceutical firms.

The outbreak has been concentrated primarily within the Mongwalu and Rwampara health zones, although suspected cases have also emerged in nearby Bunia.

Dr Jean Kaseya, director general of Africa CDC, stated: "Africa CDC stands in solidarity with the government and people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo as they respond to this outbreak.

"Given the high population movement between affected areas and neighbouring countries, rapid regional coordination is essential."

The urgency of the response stems partly from uncertainty surrounding the viral strain involved.

Previous outbreaks in the DRC have typically involved the Zaire variant of Ebola, against which effective vaccines exist.

However, initial testing indicates this outbreak may involve a different type altogether.

Ebola remains a particularly lethal illness, transmitted through direct contact with bodily fluids from infected individuals or during preparation of the deceased for burial.

The DRC has experienced 16 separate Ebola outbreaks since scientists first identified the virus within its borders in 1976.

Dr Michael Head, senior research fellow in global health at the University of Southampton, offered insight into why the nation faces such recurring crises.

Ebola

"The Democratic Republic of the Congo often sees fatalities from Ebola. There is likely a perfect storm of factors that cause these regular outbreaks," he said.

"Close human contact with animal reservoirs, most likely bats but possibly also primates, is one factor. Other concerns include the movement of people between rural and urban environments, the tropical climate, and the high rainforest coverage."
