Instead of running straight down the center of the street, however, the freshly painted lines weave noticeably from side to side. The markings caught the attention of local content creator Jordan Scott Huggins, known online as @akayoungbeefy, who filmed them and called out city officials in a video posted to TikTok and Instagram late last week. 'This video is for the Raleigh Department of Transportation,' Huggins began. 'Guys, what are we doing here? Brand new lines on a road by my house. What is this?' As the camera showed the crooked double-yellow lines, Huggins joked: 'I know drag queens straighter than this.' 'Who's laying lines for you guys? Forrest Whitaker?' he added. Huggins told the outlet that the city's changes to the road had become an ongoing saga. He said the bike lane narrowed the roadway and that he had heard about several collisions and scrapes in the area since it was installed. Huggins theorized that the double-yellow lines were added to help prevent such accidents, although city officials have not confirmed their purpose. When the new lines appeared, Huggins said they became 'progressively wacker and more out of line.' His viral video subsequently led him to learn more about the work and training involved in properly striping roads. Huggins said he was pleased the city was fixing the problem but hoped his viral video had not landed anyone in trouble. 'It's cool, but I hope I didn't get anybody fired,' he said. The South State Street portion called for 25 shared-lane markings, five speed cushions, 295 tubular markers, green bike-lane surfacing and white thermoplastic pavement markings, as well as traffic signs and traffic control. The city's contract specifications also required pavement-marking contractors to pre-mark their work and obtain an engineer's approval before completing it. Any pavement markings placed before receiving that approval could be ordered removed and replaced at no cost to the city, according to the documents. City records show South State Street was included in a broader Raleigh project involving traffic-calming and neighborhood bikeway improvements However, the documents reviewed by Daily Mail do not establish whether that contract covered the crooked double-yellow lines or who was responsible for painting them. Raleigh is not the first community to attract attention over squiggly road markings. Montgomery Township, Pennsylvania, deliberately painted wavy lines known as 'chicanes' on a road last year in an attempt to slow motorists. Those markings were eventually removed after proving unpopular with drivers. In Raleigh's case, however, officials plan to replace the squiggly lines.
