Drivers could see historic bridges replaced as vital 'everyday' crossings set for major overhaul

Drivers across Devon have been asked for their views on plans to replace two ageing bridges on one of the busiest roads in the region.

Devon County Council has launched a consultation on a £42million scheme to rebuild the two canal bridges on Bridge Road, part of the A379, a key route used by thousands of motorists every day.

The road is one of only four crossings over the River Exe and is also used as an official diversion route when there are problems on the M5.

Devon council explained that the current bridges are becoming increasingly unreliable, with more than 100 maintenance visits needed since 2020.

Repairs have frequently caused delays and disruption for drivers, bus passengers, cyclists, pedestrians and boats.

Under the plans, the 90-year-old swing bridge and 54-year-old lifting bridge would be replaced with modern lifting bridges designed to last for more than 60 years.

They would also be able to open and close more quickly, while two lanes of traffic in each direction would remain on Bridge Road under the proposed design.

Wider paths for cyclists and pedestrians, improved crossings, a new shared path near Matford Roundabout and a new bus stop and shelter close by are included in the proposals.

The council detailed how the project is intended to improve safety, make journeys more reliable and reduce the risk of future bridge closures.

Without investment, officials warned that the bridges could continue to deteriorate, potentially leading to more frequent breakdowns, higher maintenance costs and restrictions on buses and heavy goods vehicles.

Councillor Dan Thomas, Devon County Council's Cabinet Member for Highways, said: "Bridge Road is a key route for Exeter and beyond, but the current bridges are ageing and becoming less reliable.

"We want to hear from the people who use it so we can shape a scheme that improves safety and helps keep traffic moving."

The council said the proposed replacement bridges would allow traffic to continue flowing even when one bridge is closed for maintenance, improving the resilience of the route.

Construction is not expected to begin until spring 2029 and would be subject to approval from the Department for Transport.

If the project goes ahead, work is expected to take just under two years and would see the bridges rebuilt one at a time to keep the route open during construction.

Councillor Jacqi Hodgson said: "This consultation also presents an opportunity for people to share their ideas for improving access to bus services, and improving walking, cycling and wheeling links to the Exe Estuary Trail and the neighbouring communities served by Bridge Road."

The consultation opens on June 15 and runs until July 27. Residents can meet the project team at public events at Exeter University Boat Club on June 30 and July 1, or submit their views online, by email or by post.

The council explained that feedback will be used to help shape the final plans before a business case is submitted later this year.
