Draper misses out on US Open main draw - will have to qualify

Former British No 1 Jack Draper is set to have to qualify for the US Open this year as the 2024 semi-finalist missed out on a spot in the main draw.

Draper is poised to return to action at the DC Open in Washington from July 27 after missing Wimbledon due to a recurrence of bone bruising in his left arm.

The injury was the latest blow for the 24-year-old, who has managed only a handful of tournaments since first stepping away from the tour a year ago with the same issue.

Draper's ranking has taken a hit as a result, dropping down to 147th in the world, resulting in him having to likely qualify in order to play the fourth and final Grand Slam of the season.

Arthur Fery, the new British men's No 1, will feature at Flushing Meadows for the first time in his career after his remarkable run to the Wimbledon semi-finals as a wild card has seen his ranking soar to 36th in the world.

Both he and Emma Raducanu, the 2021 US Open champion, are just outside of the top 32 seeds, however, with Raducanu ranked 37th.

They're joined by fellow British hopefuls Cam Norrie, Jan Choinski and Katie Boulter in the main draw for when the tournament gets under way on August 30 - live on Sky Sports.

Two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka and Wimbledon winner Jannik Sinner will lead the fields for the respective women's and men's singles in New York.

Sabalenka will look to become the first woman to win three straight US Open titles since Serena Williams from 2012-14, while Sinner will be trying to regain the title that Carlos Alcaraz took from the 2024 champion when they met in last year's final.

The top-ranked Italian is coming off his fifth major championship, after beating French Open winner Alexander Zverev in the Wimbledon final.

Alcaraz, who has missed the last two majors because of a wrist injury but hopes to return during the North American hard-court swing, is ranked as the third seed and entered in the field.
