Police in Sydney used a Taser to subdue a large man allegedly armed with four knives and a hammer.

The incident took place on a city street, prompting a dramatic response from law enforcement.

No injuries were reported, and the man was taken into custody for further investigation.

By ASHLEY NICKEL, NEWS REPORTER, AUSTRALIA Published: 11:55, 11 August 2026 | Updated: 11:55, 11 August 2026 A man remains in hospital after being Tasered by police in an alleged drug deal gone wrong. The 43-year-old man was arrested after an officer deployed their Taser on Belmore Street in Burwood, inner-west Sydney, about 4.15pm on Monday. Police were called to the scene following reports of a man behaving suspiciously. Two men 'fled immediately' as officers arrived, Detective Chief Superintendent Christine McDonald said. 'We do believe that it was possibly a drug transaction taking place, but that's all forming part of our inquiries and the investigation is continuing,' she told a press conference on Tuesday.  The 43-year-old man was allegedly armed with four knives and a hammer. After 'several attempts and challenges asking him to drop the weapon', one of the responding officers drew his firearm and the other drew his Taser. Confronting footage showed the man running with, what appeared to be, a knife in either hand before falling over on a pedestrian crossing. A 43-year-old man was hospitalised after being Tasered by police (above) while allegedly carrying four knives, a hammer and drugs He remained on the ground as officers yelled for him to 'drop the knife'. The man initially held the weapons in the air and attempted to sit upright before being Tasered. Officers continued to ask the man to drop the blades and he eventually dropped one to the side but stayed gripping the other. Eventually, five officers gave up negotiations and pinned the man down while forcing him to give up the remaining knife. The 43-year-old was taken to hospital, where he remained on Tuesday. He was allegedly carrying two knives in his hands, two in his bag, a hammer, cannabis and methamphetamine. He is expected to face drug and weapon charges upon release.  Another man, 26, was given a court attendance notice for resisting arrest. Police were called to the scene (above) following reports of two men acting suspiciously Both men were previously known to police.  Superintendent McDonald praised the officers for defusing a situation that 'could have been much worse'. 'He was in a busy area that was crowded with people. We don't take chances when it comes to someone with knives in a public place,' she said.  She also warned against carrying weapons in public places.  'It's not worth carrying knives in public because you will be arrested by police and further charges will be laid,' Superintendent McDonald said.
