Dramatic moment cops arrest man after nine-week-old baby was left in intensive care with horrific injuries

By SARAH BROOKES - SENIOR REPORTER, AUSTRALIA Published: 05:49, 7 June 2026 | Updated: 05:49, 7 June 2026 Dramatic footage captured the moment a man was arrested six weeks after a nine-week-old baby was left in intensive care with horrific injuries.  The baby was rushed to Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a critical condition just before midnight on April 24. Police will allege the baby sustained a catalogue of devastating injuries, including extensive brain trauma, serious damage to his eyes, and multiple fractures.  The Sunshine Coast Child Protection and Investigation Unit alongside the Child Trauma Unit launched an investigation as detectives scrambled to uncover how the vulnerable newborn was so badly hurt. Over six weeks, officers carried out extensive inquiries, painstakingly piecing together the events of the baby’s short life from his birth through to the night he was rushed to hospital. The case took a dramatic turn on Saturday afternoon when police swooped on a 30-year-old man known to the child in the affluent Sunshine Coast suburb of Warana. The Currimundi man has since been charged with one count of grievous bodily harm against a child. Officers escorted him from the venue and into the back of a paddy wagon. The man was refused bail and is due to face Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Monday.
