DR Congo’s Bakambu Sends Message to Portugal Ahead of 2026 FIFA World Cup: ‘Portugal Can Be Controlled’
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) is back on football’s biggest stage after 52 years, and they are making sure everyone notices. Cédric Bakambu, DR Congo’s star forward and Real Betis player, delivered a daring message to Portugal, home to Cristiano Ronaldo: “Portugal can be controlled.”
The moment went viral thanks to a photograph taken in early April, during the celebrations following DR Congo’s historic qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In the image, Bakambu holds a sign given to him by a fan, which read in bold letters in Lingala: ‘Portugal aza maîtrisable’.

The photo was taken shortly after DR Congo defeated Jamaica 1–0 in extra time in the intercontinental playoff on March 31, sealing the Leopards’ first World Cup appearance since 1974. Bakambu dedicated the qualification to the Congolese people, especially those affected by conflict in the eastern regions.
DR Congo will open their World Cup campaign on June 17 at NRG Stadium in Houston, USA, facing Portugal in Group K. Portugal, featuring stars like Cristiano Ronaldo, possibly playing in his final World Cup at 40, enters as the favorite, making the Leopards’ debut a true test.
DR Congo steps onto the tournament as a fearless underdog, ready to fight for every ball and prove they belong.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is a chance for DR Congo to show the world that after decades of absence, they can inspire, surprise, and make their presence felt.
