Dougie Beattie provides update from Ceuta after GB News crew accosted by migrants: ‘Getting quite scary!'

Dougie Beattie has shared an update from Ceuta as the Spanish exclave continues to grapple with the “invasion” of 60,000 migrants.

Despite the Spanish army being deployed to restore order, the GB News reporter revealed things were “getting quite scary” as he and his film crew were accosted by some of the Africans who had broken into the city.

Speaking live from the rocky beaches of Ceuta, which is found on the Mediterranean coast of the African mainland, Dougie said the massive incursion and clean-up operation had caused “mayhem” for the small Spanish community.

Earlier, he had travelled to Moroccan quarters of the city and areas that overlooked the border, where he revealed it was “getting quite scary because we couldn't leave the car”.

“The migrants realised we had food in the car, realised we had water in the car, and they openly come over to you; they try to get into the vehicles.

“So it was better to avoid that area and come back to here once again, where we have almost that safety zone for ourselves.”

Elsewhere in Ceuta, Dougie said he has seen Africans attempt to loot shops to find food and water after almost all premises were placed in lockdown.

He said: “This morning we managed to find one place that was doing some food and water, and about 100 young men ran down the street.

“One of them had obviously gathered bread from somewhere else, and his own friends were attacking him to take off what he had.

“They've been trying to storm shops. They've been trying to loot because, of course, Moroccan currency is not the same as the euro, and it's not accepted here.”

Returning to the relative safety of the beach, Dougie said migrants were using the rough terrain to avoid deportation by Spanish authorities.

“We have seen many of these young men hiding up there and right along the coast under rocks," he said.

“It is extremely dangerous for everyone involved, and it's now getting to the point where the police are starting to move in on those dangerous areas.

“The army and police know exactly where they are, and they've decided to leave them there until they get off those rocks and come up the beach to go and get something to eat or drink.”

Spain has said it has now managed to remove 53,000 of the migrants, leaving 7,000 still at large.

At least 86 people are known to have died so far in the carnage, with footage of the event showing scores of migrants swarming over Ceuta’s border barriers and charging through the city streets.

The event sent shockwaves around Europe, with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni suspending Spain’s access to the EU’s open borders Schengen Area.

Spain’s socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has condemned the huge influx of migrants as “a violation of Spain's territorial integrity”.

“What has emerged from our talks with Moroccan authorities is that trafficking mafias took a self-serving interpretation of a Supreme Court ruling,” he claimed.

Just weeks earlier, the Spanish government announced it would provide amnesty to all illegal migrants in the country, with at least one million applying after the decree.
