He cautioned that they can lead to a reduction in bone density. These drugs, also known as GLP-1 inhibitors, work by utilising GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1), a hormone produced in the gut that assists in regulating blood sugar and appetite. The popularity of GLP-1 inhibitors has rocketed in recent years, owing to their success in managing blood sugar levels in diabetic patients and supporting weight loss. And in pre-clinical studies, GP-1s appear to have neutral or even protective benefits."View 3 ImagesGLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) is a hormone produced in the gut that helps control blood sugar and appetite(Image: Getty)Shedding weight "very quickly" by any method can have an impact on your bones, he warned.
