British shoppers face a fresh food safety warning after crisps were recalled from Home Bargains shelves.

The retailer has pulled 125g packets of Lay's Sour Cream & Dill Crisps from its shelves after it emerged the American-made snack contained allergens not declared on its packaging, with the Food Standards Agency (FSA) urging consumers who had purchased the product not to eat it.

The FSA's recall notice applies specifically to 125g packs of the sour cream and dill flavour bearing best before dates up to and including 31 October. No other Lay's varieties, sizes, or multipacks are caught up in the alert.

Home Bargains

Undeclared milk and wheat in the crisps present a genuine danger to those with dairy allergies or gluten intolerance.

Roughly 20 million Britons suffer from some form of dairy sensitivity, with symptoms ranging from bloating and nausea to diarrhoea.

Those living with coeliac disease — an autoimmune condition in which gluten triggers the body to attack its own small intestine — are also advised to steer well clear.

"If you have bought this product, do not eat it," the Food Standards Agency stated. The regulator did not confirm whether any consumers had fallen ill.

Separately, an urgent recall announced on 22 July affects Grahams Family Dairy semi-skimmed milk sold at three of Britain's largest supermarket chains.

The semi-skimmed milk produced by Scotland's Grahams Family Dairy has been withdrawn from Tesco, Asda, and Morrisons over fears that trace quantities of antibiotics may be present in certain batches — a concern particularly acute for anyone with a penicillin allergy.

The Stirling-based producer's 1-pint, 1-litre, and 2-litre bottles carrying a use-by date of 31 July are all implicated.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

The concern stems from potential antibiotic contamination within the affected batch, which poses a particular threat to shoppers who are allergic to penicillin.

Tesco has also confirmed it is removing the 1-litre semi-skimmed variant from its Scottish stores, where the product was stocked with the same expiry date.

Point-of-sale notices have been displayed at retailers that carried the recalled milk. Customers who have already bought any of the affected bottles are being told not to drink the product and to return it for a full refund.

Grahams Family Dairy sought to reassure the public in its official recall notification: "This is a precautionary measure we have taken as there is a small risk a trace level of antibiotics may be present in the milk which could cause a reaction to consumers with an allergy to antibiotics."

The company added an apology and stressed that no other products or dates were affected.

The recalls follow a similar incident last month involving Doritos, when packets labelled as Chilli Heatwave were found to contain Tangy Cheese crisps instead.

Since the cheesy variety includes milk as an ingredient while the spicy one does not, the FSA flagged the mix-up as an allergen risk.

Anyone holding affected products from either recall is entitled to a full refund upon return.
