'Do not drink!' Milk pulled from Tesco shelves as regulator warns shoppers 'could have reactions'

Shoppers are being urged not to consume certain bottles of Grahams Family Dairy semi-skimmed milk after both the Food Standards Agency and Tesco issued an urgent recall warning.

The Scotland-based dairy producer's products carrying a use-by date of Friday, July 31, are at the centre of the alert, which was formally announced on July 22.

Concerns centre on the possible presence of antibiotic traces in the affected batch, posing a particular danger to consumers who suffer from a penicillin allergy.

Customers who have already purchased the milk are advised to avoid drinking it and instead seek a full refund.

Three specific products fall under the recall: the 1-pint, 1-litre, and 2-litre semi-skimmed varieties, all bearing the 31st July use-by date.

Tesco has separately confirmed it is pulling the 1-litre semi-skimmed Grahams Dairy milk from its stores in Scotland, where the product was stocked with the same expiry date.

The Stirling-based dairy firm indicated in a statement released through the Food Standards Agency that a batch is believed to have been contaminated with antibiotics. No other Grahams Family Dairies products or use-by dates are thought to be affected by the issue.

In its formal recall notification, the Stirling-based company stated: "This is a precautionary measure we have taken as there is a small risk a trace level of antibiotics may be present in the milk which could cause a reaction to consumers with an allergy to antibiotics."

The firm also apologised and sought to reassure buyers that no other products or dates were implicated.

The Food Standards Agency warned veterinary medicines, including antibiotics, in the milk could render it unsafe.

It highlighted a "possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to antibiotics (penicillin)," urging consumers not to drink the product under any circumstances.

Affected customers should take the milk back to the shop where they bought it to receive a full refund. Notices are being displayed at points of sale in stores that stocked the recalled products, enabling regular shoppers to check whether they may have purchased a contaminated bottle.

According to the NHS, penicillin allergies can range from mild skin rashes that develop over hours or days to the far more serious condition of anaphylaxis, which may involve rapid swelling of the mouth, throat, or tongue alongside breathing difficulties.

While roughly one in ten people believe they are allergic to penicillin, genuine cases affect approximately one in every hundred individuals.
