The hunt remains on. In nine days’ time, Djokovic could become the first person to win 25 grand slam singles titles. And, after overcoming a fine performance from Arthur Rinderknech in four sets, Djokovic fully believes that this outlandish feat is within his grasp. Over three hours and one minute, the pair combined to produce a captivating match, relished by the Centre Court crowd. The abiding feature of this contest was how gruelling the points were. Both men moved their opponents around not just side-to-side but also from the baseline to the net, using their drop shots adroitly. Djokovic, in particular, showed a relish for lobbing his opponent. The physical toil was such that Djokovic was literally on his knees on several occasions. Yet, for Djokovic, even being face down on the grass is no indication that he has lost. When serving for the opening set, he fell to his knees while putting away a forehand volley to go 15-0 up, and then bowed to the crowd. Take a bow, Novak Djokovic 👏 The master entertainer in fine form on Centre Court. pic.twitter.com/JUVUoA7GPD — BBC Sport (@BBCSport) July 3, 2026 Aged 39, an eighth Wimbledon title would be an extraordinary achievement. Yet, on this evidence, it is far from implausible. Barring a torrid third set, when he came within a game of being bagelled, Djokovic combined his characteristic relentlessness with the extra aggression that he needs in his dotage. A 7-5, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 victory augurs well for the challenges ahead this year. Djokovic lost one set in his opening round match, before beating Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets in the second round. But Rinderknech presented a challenge of a different order. The 25th seed has only made one second week at a Grand Slam, at last year’s US Open. But the manner in which he moved Djokovic around the court, often deploying his slice to devastating effect, suggests a player who, aged 30, should have his best in front of him. If Djokovic’s prime is long gone, his present remains formidable. More to follow... Latest updates Tim Wigmore Feature Writer, at Wimbledon. There was a lot of slipping and sliding, drop shots, and cat and mouse play. He has that variety because he has a big powerful game. He was also changing the pace and putting a lot of variety in the game, so he took me out of my comfort zone. I’m just really relieved to come through this one.” Both players ended up on the floor Credit: Tolga Akmen/Shutterstock 5:17PM Djokovic reacts Link copied to clipboard “It took a bit of luck and a bit of skill in the end. It was a pretty much flawless tie-break from my side of things. I felt I did everything I could in the controllable situations. I served extremely well for most of the match, possibly except for the tie-break when I struggled with it but that was also to do with his quality. He is very tall, he hits incredible serves and he deserves a round of applause for his performance, no doubt. “I’ve never faced him before so obviously I was coming into the match knowing that I was facing someone who is already a top player and doesn’t have much to lose. Last year, he beat [Alexander] Zverev on Centre Court, so he clearly loves the big stage and he doesn’t get overwhelmed by the occasion. He showed that today. It was a really tiring and really close match, but I’m happy to overcome it in the tie-break. Sometimes you just have to find a way to win, and I’m happy I did that today.” 5:07PM Djokovic has drawn level with Federer for the most wins at Wimbledon (105) Link copied to clipboard Relief for Djokovic Credit: Eddie Mulholland for The Telegraph 4:56PM Djokovic 7-5, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4) Rinderknech - TIE-BREAK Link copied to clipboard 135mph ace from Rinderknech, 3-4. I wouldn’t rule it out. Even if he has lost half a step since his peak years as an athlete, this tournament is all about the mind. Grass-court tennis tests your mental strength and your temperament like no other surface. On clay, if you miss a break point, you don’t need to worry too much: there will be another one along in a minute. But on grass, you might only get one chance per set. This sorts the men from the boys. And Novak isn’t just a grown up; he is the elder statesman of the game. At 39, he will not be the fastest or the strongest player in the draw anymore. But Wimbledon favours the smartest players ahead of the finest physical specimens. I’m talking about people who can read the game, and who can understand their opponent’s strengths. Click here to read more from the former Wimbledon champion. 1:05PM Day five at Wimbledon Link copied to clipboard Hello and welcome to coverage from Wimbledon as Novak Djokovic takes on Arthur Rinderknech. The seven-time champion was in imperious form on Wednesday as he eased past Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight-sets under the roof. Today he opens the schedule on Centre Court against Frenchman Rinderknech. “Obviously you feel very happy, satisfied and joyful on the court when you are playing this way,” Djokovic said after beating Tsitsipas. “I’m feeling great. I try not to take these moments for granted when playing on the Centre Court of Wimbledon. I feel very privileged to be walking out on this court at age 30-plus. I don’t think it’s a cliche because I actually believe it’s true, but age is just a number.” The Serbian is expected to step out again sporting a cream blazer and if he wins today, he will be one victory shy of matching Roger Federer’s men’s record of 105 match-wins at Wimbledon. Djokovic suffered a couple of slips on Wednesday but he is not overly concerned. “It’s grass,” he said. “You’re going to fall more than any other surface. That’s one. And two, you’re going to probably have even more risk of falling if the roof is closed because the grass is slippery. There’s more moist, there’s more humidity. It’s more slippery on the court. “With my kind of movement that is quite dynamic, yeah, I mean, I’ve been lucky so far that nothing really major in a bad way has happened. It’s not something you can predict. It’s not something that you can - how can I say - prevent, as well. In the heat of the moment, you’re fighting, battling, it can happen.”المصدر: The Telegraph | Source: The Telegraph
