Just days after petrol prices reached their highest price since November 2022, diesel car owners are being warned of soaring fuel prices.

Fuel prices have fluctuated massively in recent months amid raging tensions in the Middle East, which have led to oil prices soaring to as high as $120 (£89).

Oil prices have fallen to around $83 (£62), although wholesale prices at forecourts remain high, meaning drivers are losing out when paying for petrol and diesel.

Fuel prices continued to rise over the weekend as a litre of unleaded breached 160p to a new Iran war-high of 160.85p.

RAC Fuel Watch data revealed that petrol prices are rising by an average of 0.12p per day, with drivers paying a staggering 28p more per litre than they were at the start of the Iran war.

Simon Williams, head of policy at the RAC, said: "Unleaded has now risen more than 10p a litre - seven per cent - since bottoming out at 150.59p on 6 July.

"Diesel is up 16p (15.8p) a litre, or 10 per cent, almost fully reversing June's 16.6p reduction, which was the biggest monthly drop on record."

Experts are warning that diesel drivers will continue to feel the pinch at pumps around the country with high costs.

Expensive petrol prices and a diesel pump

At present, a litre of diesel is retailing for an average of 180.34p - a price that has been seen since June 9.

Motorists keeping an eye on fuel prices in their local area can expect to see diesel costs rise by almost 0.2p per day.

Since the start of the Iran war, diesel has shot up 38p in price, although this remains distant from the previous peak of 191.54p on April 15.

Mr Williams continued, saying: "Positively for petrol car drivers, RAC analysis of wholesale fuel data shows prices at the pump should begin to stabilise this week.

"But the news for those who rely on diesel, including many businesses, is worrying as it looks set to carry on rising, possibly reaching 185p in the next week or so."

Oil prices have dropped over the last week, although much of the market remains beholden to the conflict in the Middle East and the status of the Strait of Hormuz.

Posting on social media site Truth Social, President Donald Trump warned that the US was "locked and loaded and ready to go" against Iran, adding that it will "hold off any attack in that the perimeters of a deal has been agreed to".

The President noted that this includes the "immediate, complete and total reopening of the Hormuz Strait", in addition to an end to Iran's nuclear threat.
