Broadcasting legend Sir David Attenborough has cut out one type of food that could play a part in reaching his remarkable age. He celebrates his 100th birthday on Friday, May 8. The nature presenter has ditched red meat, a decision he believes may extend his life. He said: "I have certainly changed my diet. Not in a great sort of dramatic way". He added: "But I don't think I've eaten red meat for months." While not fully vegetarian, Attenborough continues to eat cheese and fish but has "become much more vegetarian" than he ever imagined. Medical experts back his approach, with the NHS warning that too much red meat raises bowel cancer risk. Harvard Health research suggests replacing just one daily portion of red meat could reduce mortality risk by up to 19%. Red meat is also linked to elevated saturated fat levels, which can raise cholesterol and increase cardiovascular disease risk. Plant-based diets are typically richer in fibre and lower in calories. They help support weight management and gut health. Despite his healthy lifestyle, Sir David has revealed private worries about ageing and potential mental decline in recent interviews. He shared fears about becoming "helpless" through conditions like Alzheimer's. The broadcasting icon remains active, continuing to voice BBC wildlife documentaries with projects airing as recently as January 2026. Celebrations have been planned for his upcoming milestone, including a week-long celebration of Sir David's work and legacy on the BBC.
