Jason Miller / Getty Images Share full article1CLEVELAND — Chicago Cubs starter Cade Horton exited his start Friday at the Cleveland Guardians in the second inning with an apparent injury. Horton worked a quick, 1-2-3 first inning but issued a rare walk to start the second. He then threw two pitches to Bo Naylor, the second of which was a 93.8 mph heater, his 17th pitch of the day. He’d averaged over 96 mph on his heater to that point. Horton quickly motioned to the dugout, and manager Craig Counsell came out to the mound with trainer Nick Frangella. The group talked briefly before Horton exited. The press box later announced Horton was experiencing right forearm discomfort. Horton broke out in 2025 with a brilliant rookie campaign. He finished the season with a 2.67 ERA and was runner-up for Rookie of the Year. Over the summer, the young right-hander emerged as the Cubs’ best starter before missing the playoffs with a broken rib. Horton entered the year viewed as a key piece to the rotation. Colin Rea, who entered the game after the injury, and Ben Brown could slot into Horton’s spot in the rotation. After adding Edward Cabrera via trade over the offseason, the Cubs came into spring training feeling like they had strong depth. Beyond Rea and Brown, Javier Assad awaits at Triple A. Justin Steele, on the 60-day injured list after elbow surgery last summer, is eligible to return May 24, but his exact timeline is unclear. Spot the pattern.
