Gabriele Maltinti/Getty Images Share articleCrystal Palace will assess the injuries suffered by Adam Wharton and Maxence Lacroix after the pair were forced off in the second leg of their Conference League quarter-final tie with Fiorentina on Thursday night. Both players were substituted in the first half of the game, which Palace lost 2-1 but progressed to the semi-final on aggregate, and afterwards manager Oliver Glasner was unable to give any sense of the seriousness of their injuries. Wharton was first to be taken off, having injured his adductor muscle and being replaced after half an hour, before Lacroix injured his knee in a clash with team-mate Daniel Munoz while attempting to clear the ball after a Fiorentina attack. The centre-back initially tried to play on but went down again three minutes later and was replaced by Chadi Riad. Palace will be forced to wait anxiously to determine the severity of both players’ injuries. “I don’t know (how bad it is),” Glasner said in his post-match press conference. “Adam Wharton felt his adductor — that’s why he had to leave the England camp a few weeks ago. Let’s see. We have to do further assessments. “Maxence Lacroix tried to hit the ball and it was a clash then when you’re not stable with the knee and you overstretch your ligament, this is what happened. Hopefully it’s not too serious but I can’t tell you the exact diagnosis. “The medial ligament looks like it is overstretched.” The Palace manager also revealed that those injuries forced him to substitute Jean-Philippe Mateta earlier than anticipated in order to ensure he retained the option for further changes later in the game. “Two subs before half-time meant we lost two windows to make subs. That’s why we took off JP Mateta at half-time, because we knew he couldn’t play the whole game and we needed another window. “Maybe we can’t play them for the rest of the season, we don’t know right now. It was a very intense game. We have so many games to play and at the end we did what was necessary and over the two legs we made the biggest step at home. “We could see how important the third goal was in the 91st minute at Selhurst Park to come to Florence with a three goal lead because this team is very experienced in this competition. They have shown they know how to deal with difficult situations. We have huge respect for the Fiorentina team. Making two subs due to injury in the first half made it more difficult. Over two legs we deserved to win.” Palace’s players will be given the opportunity to enjoy themselves overnight with Glasner rewarding their victory by allowing them a free night, something he hopes will bring the same success as it did when his Eintracht Frankfurt team won the Europa League in 2022. “The players asked if they can go out tonight. This is the same, the Frankfurt players asked if they could go out after winning the quarter-final (of the Europa League). I agreed then and I agreed tonight.
