A town council is set to oppose plans to house migrants in a military base, despite the town being 50 miles away from that base.
The Home Office confirmed earlier this year that it would seek planning permission to use the former RAF Linton-on-Ouse, near York, to house up to 1,200 asylum seekers while their claims were processed.
However, Reform-led Scarborough Council has said it is seeking “urgent assurances” from the Home Office and North Yorkshire Council.
The council has raised concerns about whether the seaside town would be used as a placement area for those who have not been processed without “a comprehensive, open consultation".
North Yorkshire Council has unanimously opposed the plans in a motion passed last month.
The council has argued that the RAF base is not a suitable location for housing asylum seekers, due to its isolated area, lack of infrastructure and its proximity to schools and residential communities.
The Local Democracy Reporting Service has said that a motion is formally due to be discussed by the town council on Tuesday.
The motion calls for a “full impact assessment” of the effects of housing in Scarborough.
It proposes that members of the town council “continue monitoring the situation and advocate for Scarborough residents in all future discussions relating to housing, migration and community impact.”
The Home Office has previously stated that the use of the site would be “subject to detailed feasibility assessments, which could take several months to complete.”
Independent councillor Rich Maw, a member of Scarborough Town Council and North Yorkshire Council, said: "I have no problem with discussing important issues, but too often this administration brings forward motions that are poorly constructed, contain vague commitments or stray well beyond what a parish council can realistically deliver.
"Residents need more than political statements and intentions.

"They need properly thought-through proposals, within the council's powers, with clear actions, responsibilities and outcomes."
The Home Office said in a statement: “This government is closing every asylum hotel and moving asylum seekers into alternative accommodation, including former military sites.
"We are working to fairly house asylum seekers across the country, engaging with local authorities to reduce the impact on communities.
"The numbers in asylum accommodation are now falling, with costs down by £1bn since the general election."
Residents are also furious in Barnham, near the RAF base of the same name.
Callum Banthorpe, a 23-year-old who bought his first home in the village for £180,000 in January, expressed deep concern about the lack of local infrastructure to support surging numbers.
He said: "We have not got the infrastructure here for a sudden influx of 1,250 people."
Mr Banthorpe also said that he might have reconsidered his purchase had he known about the plans beforehand.
