the signing of British boxer Conor Benn to a new, multi-fight deal, following on from the one-fight deal they announced with him in February. The new promotional deal is for five fights and extends through 2028. Benn’s first fight with Zuffa came against American Regis Prograis at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last Saturday, with the 29-year-old (25-1, 14 KOs) being made to work hard but emerging as the winner by unanimous decision after 10 rounds. It was Benn’s first fight away from Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Sport, who had promoted him since he turned professional in 2016. While Benn has insisted he still has nothing but good feelings towards Hearn and Matchroom, the same cannot be said in reverse, with Hearn making it clear he has been left “devastated” by the manner in which Benn made the move. In an interview with IFL, Hearn said: “When I received the email from his lawyer, I texted him to have a call. For everything I’ve done, I deserve a call. He said ‘no.’ I just think the way it was done was very, very wrong. But everyone is different. Some people, loyalty really matters, other people maybe not so.” Dana White, who leads Zuffa Boxing – a newly formed promotional outfit owned by Saudi Arabian entertainment group Sela (who own 60 per cent) and U.S. combat sports giant TKO Holdings – said of the new deal with Benn: “We’re ready to put on some big fights.” Benn said: “Our visions are aligned, our goal remains the same – to get that world title. More importantly, give people the fights they want – give people the mega fights.” The first of those looks most likely to be against current WBC welterweight world champion Ryan Garcia, who Benn called out after his victory on Saturday night. In a video posted to social media, Benn said: “Garcia, I want my belt! I want my belt. Keep my belt warm. September. Let’s go. Any day of the week. Twice on Sundays. 10 rounds, easy. Garcia, you’re next.” While no deal is yet in place, talks are ongoing for that fight to be made, with Garcia posting on his social media channel that it would take place in Las Vegas in August. He has not fought at the welterweight limit of 147lb since 2022 but is ranked No. 1 by the WBC in the 147-pound division. Benn’s two fights against Chris Eubank Jr last year (the first of which he lost, before avenging that defeat in the second) came at the middleweight limit of 160lb. But the Prograis bout was fought at a catchweight of 150lb, and Benn was heard saying that he felt he could have made 147lb. Spot the pattern.
