David Zalubowski / Associated Press Share full article2Colorado quarterback Dominiq Ponder’s blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit when he died March 1 in a single-vehicle crash, according to an autopsy report from the Boulder County Coroner’s office. Ponder’s blood alcohol level was 0.167, according to the autopsy report. The legal limit for driving under the influence is 0.08. Ponder, who was 23, was killed when he lost control of his Tesla Model 3 and crashed through a guardrail on a curve on Baseline Road in Boulder, Colo., police said. Ponder’s cause of death was multiple blunt-force injuries, according to the coroner’s report. He suffered multiple skull fractures, a “severely lacerated heart” and had a “lacerated brain stem,” the report said. Ponder’s vehicle crossed into the eastbound lane, hit a guardrail, struck an electrical line and caught on fire after landing on its wheels at the bottom of an embankment, police said. Ponder was pronounced dead at the scene. “The deceased was a restrained driver involved in a single vehicle collision at a high rate of speed,” the report said. The Colorado State Patrol said a preliminary investigation determined that speed was a suspected factor in the crash, but the incident was under further investigation. Catrina Hughes, Ponder’s mother, said in a statement that “what matters most to me is who Dominiq was as a person.” “He was a determined student athlete, a leader and someone with a huge heart who fiercely loved his family, his teammates, and the game of football,” she said. “If anything good can come from this loss, it’s the conversations it can start about responsible decision-making, supporting young adults, and making good choices even in ordinary moments. One bad decision can alter everything.” Colorado coach Deion Sanders was among several attendees who eulogized Ponder at a memorial service last month. Ponder appeared in two games for the Buffaloes last season. He arrived in Colorado before the 2024 season, after beginning his career at Bethune-Cookman. Spot the pattern.
