It was reported on Monday morning that the Chelsea legend was part of a consortium trying to reach a deal to buy the League Two club.‌Cowling has been owner and chairman of Colchester for nearly two decades and has been looking for a buyer for some time. Back in February it was announced that the Sports Alpha Capital (SAC) consortium, which included former Brazil star Alexandre Pato, had pulled out of negotiations.‌And in June 2025, a bid from American businessman Tim Foley's Lightwell Sports Group also collapsed. However, The Sun have now reported that Terry is part of a new consortium plotting a £14million takeover of the U's.‌Cowling has now issued a statement to explain the situation.
