Climate Change Leads Tropical, Subtropical Fish to Morocco’s Dakhla
Rabat – A new study suggests that climate change may be behind the recent appearance of three species of tropical and subtropical fish in Morocco’s southern city of Dakhla.
Research Gate published a new study reporting the first-ever recorded presence of the three species in the Bay of Dakhla.
The report identified the species as the Atlantic bumper Chloroscombrus chrysurus, four-banded butterflyfish Chaetodon hoe-fleri, and Guinean parrotfish Scarus hoefleri.
Citing active visual surveys, remote camera observations, and surveys, the study said the expansion of these species along the coast is likely due to climate change.
The report further explained that the surface temperature in Dakhla has been increasing over the past two decades, which leads to the expansion of the range of species found within tropical eastern Atlantic waters.
“As a result, species with ranges not normally within the bay may be observed in greater numbers,” the study said.
Dakhla is a world-renowned destination for its turquoise lagoons, beaches, and resort destinations, attracting tourists from across the world.
Moroccan authorities are now seeking to boost the city’s appeal further.
Morocco’s Tourism Office (ONMT) has recently reiterated its commitment to accelerating the development of Dakhla as a leading tourism destination.
The office aims to reinforce the city’s position through developing diverse tourism segments like sports, nature, and experiential travel.
Beyond tourism, Dakhla is also attracting investors, especially with the development of the mega project of Dakhla port.
The major project is part of Morocco’s new development model for the southern provinces. The port’s ultimate goal is to transform the region into a key economic hub connecting to African markets.
Morocco aims to launch the Dakhla Atlantique port in 2028, strengthening the country’s role as a gateway to Sahel trade corridors.
