Katie Januck / Getty Share articleClemson defensive tackle Hevin Brown-Shuler is expected to miss the 2026 season while he undergoes treatment for Hodgkin lymphoma, the school announced Tuesday. The 20-year-old Brown-Shuler, who went through spring practice and last month participated in Clemson’s spring game, said he was diagnosed with the disease after doctors found a mass on his chest in April. He received the official diagnosis this month. “While this news was difficult to receive, I am grateful that the prognosis is very good,” Brown-Shuler said in a statement through the school, “and I am approaching this challenge with optimism and determination. “I have already experienced incredible care and support from the Clemson community and my Pace (Academy) community. Because of the people around me, I have been connected with outstanding doctors and have received exceptional medical care, for which I am deeply thankful.” Hodgkin lymphoma is a cancer that impacts the lymphatic system. According to the National Cancer Institute, it is one of the more common cancer diagnoses among young adults from ages 15 to 19. It is considered one of the more curable types of cancer, and Brown-Shuler’s medical team is optimistic about treating him. Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said Brown-Shuler will begin treatment this month. “The Clemson Family and the entire college football world are with Hevin,” Swinney said. “As a program, we’ll wrap our arms around him and his family as he steps away from football temporarily to focus on his health. Hevin, his family and the amazing medical teams that are caring for him will be in our prayers.” Brown-Shuler signed with Clemson as a four-star recruit in the Class of 2024 out of Pace Academy in Atlanta. He was the nation’s No. 302 prospect and No. 38 defensive lineman, joining one of Clemson’s most dominant position groups. He picked the Tigers over 12 other schools: South Carolina, Georgia, Michigan, Penn State, Colorado, USC, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, North Carolina, Oregon and Virginia. He recorded five tackles in 49 defensive snaps as a redshirt in 2024 and had one tackle in 57 snaps and three games last season. “I know there is a long journey ahead, but I am encouraged by the outlook and surrounded by tremendous support from family, friends, teammates and my communities,” he said. “I appreciate everyone’s prayers, encouragement and respect for privacy as I focus on treatment and recovery.” Spot the pattern.
