Passenger traffic at Aleppo International Airport, April 6, 2026 (Syrian General Authority of Civil Aviation)

The Syrian General Authority of Civil Aviation announced today, Wednesday, April 8, the reopening of all air corridors that had previously been closed and the resumption of air traffic through Syrian airspace.

In a press statement, the authority said operations had resumed normally at Damascus International Airport, with arriving and departing flights operating according to approved schedules.

The decision followed a comprehensive technical assessment carried out in coordination with regional and international bodies, “to ensure the highest standards of aviation safety and enhance the efficiency and smooth flow of air navigation in line with international standards,” according to the authority’s statement.

According to the General Authority of Civil Aviation, the move came in response to recent regional developments and was based on ongoing technical assessments conducted by a specialized risk management committee.

The decision to reopen all air corridors and resume traffic through Syrian airspace came following the announcement of a two-week ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran.

Real-time monitoring

For his part, the head of the Syrian General Authority of Civil Aviation, Omar Hosari, said in a post on X today, Wednesday, April 8, that the authority is continuing real-time assessments of the operational situation through the specialized committee.

He added that the authority remains committed to reopening all airspace and air routes at various levels, alongside restarting airports and resuming operations, in full coordination with regional and international bodies and air traffic control centers in neighboring countries.

Closures amid regional tensions

On February 28, the Syrian General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport announced the temporary closure of the southern air corridors in Syrian airspace amid the regional escalation involving Iran, before later extending the closure to include March 1 and 2.

At the time, the authority said the move was based on ongoing operational and technical assessments, in light of security developments in the region and as part of efforts to maintain the highest standards of civil aviation safety and security.

On March 3, the authority announced the reopening of air corridors in the northern sector of Syrian airspace toward Turkey.

This was followed on March 4 by the reopening of Aleppo International Airport, while the rest of the air corridors and Damascus International Airport remained closed until further notice.

On March 5, the authority also announced the reopening of an air corridor linking Aleppo to the Mediterranean Sea, alongside the resumption of northern air corridors toward Turkey and the restart of operations at Aleppo International Airport.

On March 7, the General Authority of Civil Aviation granted Syrian Airlines approval to operate several flights from Aleppo International Airport to a number of regional destinations via a safe air route passing over the Mediterranean.

These measures came in the context of recent regional developments, particularly following the military escalation between Iran and Israel and the accompanying security tensions that affected air traffic in several Middle Eastern countries.

These developments prompted many airlines and civil aviation authorities to reassess flight paths and make adjustments to air navigation routes to ensure civil aviation safety.
