Appearing live on Breakfast, the Shadow Home Secretary me within meters of a large group of asylum seekers on the Boulogne-sur-Mer coast as they prepared to board a small boat destined for the UK.

Walking with the group along the beach, Mr Philp told GB News: "I'm on a beach in northern France, just south of Boulogne-sur-Mer, and I've been tracking a group of illegal immigrants.

"You can see they're currently walking along the beach behind me towards a boat pickup point to attempt an illegal crossing into the UK."

The Tory MP noted many in the large group had "already got life jackets" and most of them were "young men".

He said: "There are no French police on this beach whatsoever. In this group there are probably 20 or 30 illegal migrants, mostly young men, it looks like mainly from sub-Saharan Africa.

"And yesterday the French were assisting the migrant dinghy by handing out life jackets. This group seem to have got themselves life jackets already, and the French made no attempt to stop the embarkation."

Mr Philp stressed he managed to find the large group "within a matter of hours" of reporting on the crisis from the French coast.

He said: "Shabana Mahmood should not be paying half a billion pounds of our money to the French when they're failing to stop these embarkation. I only arrived here yesterday, and I managed to find this group of illegal immigrants in just a matter of a few hours.

"So why haven't the French police been able to do that? Andy Burnham's claim that this problem has been solved is clearly ridiculous."

Criticising the Prime Minister further, Mr Philp argued it is "nonsense" of the Government to claim their actions have resulted in securing Britain's borders.

He said: "The reduced numbers are simply down to the weather. The sea and the channel has been quite choppy so far this year, the only thing protecting our borders is essentially the wave height in the English Channel, it is not a deal.

"And as you can see from the evidence surrounding me right now, Andy Burnham's claim this problem has been solved is complete nonsense."

Mr Philp then attempted to speak to one of the migrants in the group, asking them why they are boarding a small boat and where are they originally from.

The man simply replied: "I don't speak English."

The Shadow Home Secretary told the People's Channel he is "almost certain" that a people smuggler is amongst the group, leading them to the rendezvous point for the boat crossing.

He said: "We saw earlier today some of the people smugglers kind of scouting out the Gendarmerie positions early in the morning at 5am

"In this group, there probably is a people smuggler, at least one in this group, it's very difficult to know, they're covering their faces, but almost certainly one of these people is a people smuggler, leading this group to the rendezvous point and where the embarkation will occur."

Mr Philp concluded the Prime Minister is "out of touch" on the state of the migration crisis.

He told Britain's News Channel: "Shabana Mahmood is not getting value for money for the half billion pounds that she is spending. And when Andy Burnham says the problem is fixed, he is completely out of touch. Just look at the look at the images behind me."
