A chocolate company has recalled an entire product line over fears its bars could be contaminated with salmonella . Spring & Mulberry issued a voluntary recall on May 8 to include its entire line of 12 date-sweetened chocolate bar varieties - including all flavours sold online and in shops since last August. The potential contamination issue is thought to come from the dates within the bars, according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It follows an earlier recall that only affected the brand's Mint Leaf bars. A statement from the FDA said: "Spring & Mulberry is voluntarily expanding its previously announced recall of select chocolate bars due to possible contamination from Salmonella. "This expansion follows a comprehensive root cause investigation conducted by the company’s manufacturing partners in coordination with leading food safety experts and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The investigation has now identified a single lot of date ingredient used in the production of the company’s chocolate as the most likely source of contamination. "In response, Spring & Mulberry is recalling all finished products produced with the implicated lot of date ingredient. All products included in this expanded recall have tested negative for Salmonella, and there have been no confirmed reports of illness associated with the chocolate bars referenced below, to date. This announcement follows a recall by the company’s supplier." The FDA said customers who have purchased any of the affected products are "urged not to consume them", and should take a photo of the product showing the batch code and email it to Spring and Mulberry to receive a refund. Spring & Mulberry, a brand specialising in date-sweetened, no-added-sugar dark chocolate, is not generally sold in shops in the UK, though it is listed by some specialist online retailers. The recall affects the following flavours of their chocolate bars: Blood Orange, Coffee, Earl Grey, Lavender Rose, Mango Chili, Mint Leaf, Mixed Berry, Mulberry Fennel, Pecan Date, Pure Dark, Pure Dark Mini, and Sea Salt. An initial recall notice was issued in January for the Mint Leaf flavour bar sold from September 15, 2025, onwards. The chocolate treats included in the recall expansion were sold online and through select retail partners from August 2025. The impacted products can be identified by their batch or lot code, UPC number of box colour - information of which is available here . All the chocolate bars included in the expansion of the recall have tested negative for salmonella so far and no illnesses have been reported as of yet. However, customers are still being urged not to consume the impacted products as a precaution. Salmonella is an infection of the gut caused by a bacteria which can cause food poisoning. Symptoms include watery diarrhoea, stomach cramps, and sometimes vomiting or a high temperature, and typically develop between eight hours and three days of being infected.
