Chinese FM Wang Yi meets Australian FM Penny Wong in Manila

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Tuesday expressed the hope that Australia will work with China to safeguard the improving trajectory of their relations.

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks when meeting with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong in Manila, the Philippines.

Under the joint guidance of the two countries' leaders, China-Australia relations have returned to a track of improvement and development, an outcome that serves the interests of both peoples and meets the expectations of the international community, Wang said.

He noted that China is ready to enhance exchanges with Australia, build up mutual trust, expand cooperation, and work for continued new progress in bilateral ties.

Wang emphasized that both sides should address differences with mutual respect and equality, and foster a virtuous cycle of positive growth in the relationship, rather than allowing it to be disrupted or undermined by prejudice.

He also voiced the hope that Australia would uphold the principle of non-interference in internal affairs and abandon double standards.

For her part, Wong said that Australia places high importance on its relations with China, firmly adheres to the one-China policy, and does not support "Taiwan independence."

She noted that Australia is ready to advance mutually beneficial cooperation with China, properly address differences through dialogue and engagement, and promote the sound and steady development of Australia-China relations.

A peaceful, stable and prosperous Asia-Pacific serves the common interests of both countries, and Australia will support China in hosting this year's APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting, she said.
