Chicken wraps urgently recalled over potentially deadly E.coli fears

A food company has issued an apology after its wraps were recalled over a possible contamination with deadly bacteria.

People have been told to stop eating several filled wraps made by Summit Foods after possible E.coli was found in them.

Possible presence of E. coli that can produce Shiga toxin (STEC) was detected in four types of wraps and fajitas.

Symptoms linked to the bacterial infection can include bloody diarrhoea, and a serious condition that can lead to kidney failure and death.

Food Standards Agency said Summit Foods recalled individually packaged Snacksters Chicken Fajita Wrap, Snacksters Hoi Sin Wrap, East Street Deli Sweet Chilli Chicken Wrap, and Target a Snack Chicken Fajita Wrap.

All the recalled products have a use-by date of up to and including September 5, 2026.

The food watchdog said: ‘Symptoms caused by STEC can include severe diarrhoea (including bloody diarrhoea), abdominal pain and occasionally haemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a serious condition that can lead to kidney failure and can be fatal.

‘If you are experiencing these symptoms, you should stay away from work, school or nursery until you have stopped having symptoms for at least 48 hours to avoid passing it on to others.’

People who bought the product are urged not to eat it and dispose of it, the food watchdog said.

Reaction from the food firm

Summit Foods issued a statement following the FSA recall: ‘As part of our routine testing, we have identified a potential food safety issue affecting a small number of our wrap products.

‘We are working closely with the authorities and our customers to recall the affected products.

‘Consumer safety remains our highest priority.

‘We are sorry for any concern or inconvenience this may cause.’
