Mike Carlson / Getty Images Share article8The Athletic has live coverage of the 2026 NFL Draft. The Chicago Bears selected Iowa center Logan Jones with the 57th pick in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft on Friday night. The Bears did their due diligence on centers in the pre-draft process, hosting several at Halas Hall for 30 visits, including Jones. After Drew Dalman’s retirement, they traded for Garrett Bradbury, but he’s in the last year of his contract. Jones has a “rugged demeanor and hates coming off the field,” The Athletic’s Dane Brugler writes, which fits exactly what Bears coach Ben Johnson wants. Johnson values the center position highly, and it’s something general manager Ryan Poles has wanted to find some longevity with — that’s why he signed Dalman last March. Now the Bears have Jones to learn from Bradbury this season before potentially taking over in 2027. A four-year starter at Iowa, Jones was a fixture at center (right-handed snapper) in offensive coordinator Tim Lester’s zone-blocking scheme. After enrolling as a 260-pound defensive tackle, he made the transition to center and admirably filled Tyler Linderbaum’s shoes. He gave up only one sack over his junior and senior seasons and had a prolific 2025 season, taking home the Rimington Trophy as the nation’s top center. He was a significant factor in the Hawkeyes winning the 2025 Joe Moore Award as college football’s best offensive line. Jones ranked No. 95 in Dane Brugler’s top 300 big board. Here’s what Brugler said about Thieneman in his annual NFL Draft guide: “Jones is an undersized, sawed-off blocker with aggressive technique and athletic ability, although his sustain struggles might be tough to overcome. A center-only prospect, he is a mid-round version of Tyler Linderbaum.” A blocker with vise-grip hands and strong technique — but undersized. There are concerns about Jones’ size (6-3, 299) and short arms (30 ¾), but his quickness (4.90 40) and power (705-pound squat, 480-pound hang clean) make up for those detriments. Jones won the Rimington Award as the nation’s top center and was a unanimous first-team All-American for the top offensive line in the country. After two seasons as a defensive tackle, Jones flipped to center, where he started 51 games. There aren’t many players more mature than Jones. Grade: B+ With the Bears targeting passionate, competitive football players to build with, Jones checks those boxes in Sharpie. His quickness and intelligence will also help him acclimate to Ben Johnson’s offense. And while some evaluators see him as a bit undersized, his understanding of leverage is top-notch and his technique sharpness registers. He won’t be rushed into a starting role with Garrett Bradbury arriving via trade last month. But using premium draft capital on Jones is an investment the Bears believe in. The Bears traded a 2027 fifth-round pick to the Patriots in March to land Bradbury as their replacement for retired Pro Bowl center Drew Dalman. But Bradbury may now become a bridge center for quarterback Caleb Williams as Jones arrives with his opportunity to grow and develop under offensive line coaches Dan Roushar and Kyle DeVan. Can he challenge for a starting job quickly? Perhaps. But the Bears’ desire to have a veteran center in front of Williams for 2026 figures to dictate their Plan A. A run on edge rushers Friday night left that position group a bit thin, with pass rushers still available at No. 57, including Dani Dennis-Sutton, Keyron Crawford and Romello Height. Defensive tackle Domonique Orange could have filled a need at defensive tackle. And cornerbacks Jermod McCoy, Keith Abney and Davison Igbinosun were also still on the board. Receivers Chris Bell and Malachi Fields were also options. Once again, it’s likely the Bears will highlight Jones’ passion for football as one of the traits that attracted them to him. He was a four-year starter at Iowa and was considered to be the engine of a Hawkeyes line that was touted as the nation’s best via the 2025 Joe Moore Award. Spot the pattern.
