A bench of Chief Justice Ramesh Sinha and Justice Arvind Kumar Verma set aside a trial court’s 2007 acquittal and pronounced Amit Jogi guilty. Former Chhattisgarh assembly member Amit Jogi. (X)The high court reopened the case last month. In November 2025, the Supreme Court asked the high court to reconsider the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)’s plea challenging the acquittal. It observed there was a delay in filing the appeal, but the charges against Amit Jogi were “very grave”, involving a conspiracy to murder a political rival, and warranted consideration on merits. Amit Jogi said he was denied an opportunity to be heard and termed the conviction a grave injustice. He expressed confidence that he would get relief from the Supreme Court. Amit Jogi said he has full faith in the judicial system. Satish Jaggi, son of Ramavatar Jaggi, welcomed the verdict. “Truth has prevailed.” He said his family’s two-decade-long wait for justice finally ended and expressed gratitude to the judiciary and the CBI. Ramavatar Jaggi was shot dead in Raipur on June 4, 2003, when Ajit Jogi was the Chhattisgarh chief minister. The case was transferred from the state police to the CBI. The trial court convicted 28 accused in 2007 and acquitted Amit Jogi. The CBI challenged the acquittal, but the high court dismissed its plea in 2011 on grounds of delay. The state government and Jaggi’s family filed separate appeals. The Supreme Court revived the matter, observing that the high court should have adopted a more pragmatic approach and examined the case on the merits. State Correspondent for Chhattisgarh.
