Rosenior, 41, was sacked on Wednesday after losing five straight league games without scoring a goal, the first time Chelsea have suffered such a run since 1912. As The Athletic reported on Thursday, Rosenior lost support from his players while there was also a split between factions in the dressing room. “We haven’t had a clear-the-air meeting,” McFarlane, who was one of Rosenior’s assistants, said ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final against Leeds United. “We are getting the group focused for Sunday, spoken about the game plan and how we’re going to approach the game both in and out of possession. “It’s really important that we have a real focus for the game on Sunday. You can’t be thinking about anything else. What’s gone on in the past doesn’t need to be spoken about.” McFarlane, the 40-year-old appointed Chelsea’s under-21 coach last summer, had a two-game spell in charge of the first team after Enzo Maresca left the club on January 1 before Rosenior joined from Strasbourg. He oversaw a draw against Manchester City and a defeat to Fulham. Pressed on whether the players need to take responsibility for the downturn under Rosenior which caused him to lose his job, McFarlane added: “Of course, they’re on the pitch. They’re top players that can perform at a really high level and that hasn’t happened for whatever reason. “They’ll take their responsibility in that but you’ve got to adapt. You’ve got to move on. You’ve got to be ready for the next challenge and the next challenge is Leeds.” Chelsea hope to welcome back Joao Pedro (thigh) and Cole Palmer (hamstring). Both players have been in training after missing two and one games respectively. Estevao (hamstring) has been ruled out for the rest of the campaign after suffering a grade four tear which also puts his chances of playing at the World Cup for Brazil in doubt. Spot the pattern.
