Ryan Pierse/Getty Images Share articleChelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo is set to sign a new contract at the club. The 24-year-old has five years remaining on his existing deal but is set to sign fresh terms at Stamford Bridge. Caicedo joined Chelsea from Brighton & Hove Albion in August 2023 in a £115million ($146m) move, a British record transfer fee. The Ecuador international signed an eight-year contract with the club and has gone on to make 140 appearances since, scoring eight times. Caicedo has been a regular in midfield despite significant upheaval at Chelsea this campaign, playing 42 times across all competitions. The new deal follow closely after his fellow midfielder Enzo Fernandez was banned for two games after comments that appeared to suggest the Argentina international was interested in a move to Real Madrid. Following Fernandez’s suspension the pair are set to play alongside each other once more when Chelsea host top-four rivals Manchester United on Saturday evening. Sixth-placed Chelsea are currently seven points behind Michael Carrick’s visitors, who lie third with six games of the season remaining. Analysis by Chelsea correspondent Cerys Jones This is the show of faith in their project that Chelsea’s hierarchy have seriously needed from another player in their leadership group. Reece James’ new deal, announced last month, was cited by Liam Rosenior as a result of his belief in the club’s direction and the head coach hinted in a press conference two weeks ago that further renewals could be on the way. Although Caicedo’s existing deal still ran for another five years, agreeing new terms reflects his importance to Chelsea’s plans, their determination to snuff out any speculation over his future and his apparent belief in Chelsea’s direction. From a more cynical point of view, it also comes across as a message to Fernandez. The Argentine is expected to return to the matchday squad this weekend after an internal suspension for comments that stirred speculation over his Chelsea future. Fernandez’s agent Javier Pastore told The Athletic that previous talks about a new deal had been paused and were planned to resume after the World Cup, because the club “weren’t very realistic about Enzo’s current situation”. He added that the midfielder “deserves much more than he’s currently earning”. James and now Caicedo securing new and presumably improved terms seems to demonstrate a willingness on Chelsea’s part to renegotiate deals, even far in advance of their expiry, where they feel it is merited. Whether they are willing to do the same for Fernandez in light of his recent actions remains to be seen. Spot the pattern. Connect the terms Find the hidden link between sports terms
