CAS imposes lifetime ban on Pakistan weightlifting officials for doping violations

The Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) has welcomed the Court of Arbitration for Sport Anti-Doping Division’s ruling imposing lifetime bans on former Pakistan Weightlifting Federation President Hafiz Imran Butt and coach Irfan Butt for serious anti-doping rule violations. The PSB described the decision as a major step in safeguarding the integrity of sport and ensuring accountability for individuals involved in systemic doping practices. A spokesperson for the board said the CAS ruling independently validates PSB’s firm stance against doping in Pakistan. “We had already taken decisive action in November 2025, suspending and banning individuals involved in doping-related misconduct after multiple hearings and due process,” the spokesperson noted. The PSB reaffirmed that its anti-doping policy, introduced last year, enforces zero tolerance for any violations. Under this policy, Hafiz Imran Butt and Irfan Butt are prohibited from participating in any sports-related activity in Pakistan in any capacity, including administrative, coaching, or support roles. The board emphasized that strict compliance with the CAS decision will be ensured across all levels of sport in the country without exception. “The integrity of sport is paramount, and this ruling sends a clear message that anti-doping rules will be enforced rigorously,” the spokesperson added. The PSB said it will continue to implement measures to prevent doping, promote fair play, and maintain Pakistan’s commitment to clean sport on national and international platforms.
