Rodón followed up his poor season debut six days prior with another bad outing, lasting just 3 2/3 innings in a 6-3 loss at Citi Field. The Yankees won Friday night, and the rubber match is set for Sunday afternoon. Rodón gave up two earned runs (three total), three hits, three walks and six strikeouts. The Yankees waited for more than a month for him to return from offseason surgery on his left elbow, and he hasn’t seemed ready yet. “If we’re being blunt,” he said, “they didn’t go well at all.” Here are some observations from Rodón’s start: Rodón’s worst sequence came in the third inning when he collected the first two outs and then allowed a Carson Benge double, a walk to Bo Bichette and a walk to Juan Soto. Then with Mark Vientos at the plate and his pitch count at 67, Rodón rifled a 97 mph fastball over the umpire’s head. The ball caromed off the concrete wall behind home plate on the fly, and then kicked into the air. Rodón snagged it with his left hand and tried to make a ridiculous leaping, stumbling throw home to stop Benge from scoring. Didn’t work. The ball missed catcher Austin Wells by a mile, and Bichette scored to turn a 1-0 Yankees lead to a 2-1 disadvantage. “Stupid play,” he said. “Trying to make a superhero play on the ball back. That’s one I’ve got to eat. … That can’t happen.” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Rodón was trying to “do too much in that spot.” In the next inning, Brett Baty’s double to right field off Rodón scored Austin Slater. Then it all fell apart. “It just kind of unraveled on me,” he said. “Simple stuff. Just got to attack the zone better. The command is just wonky at the moment. Just have to be better in those moments, especially (with) two outs. Can’t give up runs like that. Just got to get ahead and attack.” Rodón added that he “didn’t really give the team a chance there. Kind of beat myself. Got to be better.” Is he rusty from his long layoff? Boone and Rodón were split. “I’m never going to make an excuse,” Rodón said. “I think I should be dialed in right now. It’s frustrating. I want to be better. I’m not going to give myself that leash.” “Probably a little bit of the rhythm,” Boone said. Rodón said he felt his stuff was good. He got good swing-and-miss on his slider (5-for-15) and his changeup (2-for-4). His fastball touched 97.3 mph. “First two innings of both starts,” he said, “there was pretty good command in the zone, getting ahead. Get some swing-and-miss. I just need to put it all together here.” Boone said Rodón must “dial in” his command. “Obviously,” Boone said. “Not being able to finish off some innings, but innings where he gets dinged there. It’s two outs (with) nobody on. Some long at-bats.” The other positive? It wasn’t from Rodón but from Gerrit Cole (Tommy John surgery), who made his sixth rehab start at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and pitched well, touching 100 mph. Cole went 5 1/3 innings, striking out six and walking one while giving up just one run. But back in Queens, Rodón sounded resigned with his final comment to reporters. “It’s not a two-inning game,” he said. “We play nine innings here.” Spot the pattern.
