The post laid out a seemingly simple plan. Split Rs 3 crore equally between the Nifty 50 and a fixed deposit, withdraw Rs 1 lakh every month and let the rest of the money continue earning returns. It sounds like enough. After all, Rs 3 crore is a large sum and Rs 1 lakh a month adds up to Rs 12 lakh a year. But whether the money can actually last a lifetime depends on one thing the simple calculation can easily miss: what happens as the years pass. Taking out Rs 1 lakh every month means withdrawing Rs 12 lakh in a year. From a Rs 3 crore corpus, that is an initial withdrawal rate of 4%. If the money continues to earn healthy returns and the monthly withdrawal stays fixed at Rs 1 lakh, the corpus could last a long time. After 30 years, it would be roughly Rs 5.74 lakh. So, a person who keeps withdrawing only Rs 1 lakh every month may not run out of money quickly, but their money will buy less and less over time.
