Rabat – The 2026 Futsal Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to take place in Morocco this April, has been officially postponed to October 12-21.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirmed the change quietly, without issuing a public statement.

The postponement follows similar delays to other continental tournaments, including the women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Journalist Romain Molina had already hinted at the possibility last month, later confirming that CAF informed teams mid-preparation. He criticized the lack of respect shown to players and federations.

According to Sport News Africa, the decision was communicated through an internal memo rather than an official announcement.

Several federations were caught off guard, forced to adjust training schedules and logistical plans at short notice.

Morocco as host

Morocco was awarded hosting rights in December 2025 after no other federation volunteered. The North African country has become the default organizer of futsal competitions, having staged the AFCON in 2020 and 2024, both won by the Atlas Lions, as well as the Women’s Futsal AFCON in 2025, won by the Atlas Lionesses.

The 2026 edition is expected to be held in Rabat, continuing Morocco’s role as a central hub for African futsal.

CAF’s handling of the postponement has drawn criticism for its lack of transparency. The governing body has often been accused of poor communication, and this latest episode reinforces those concerns.

Teams preparing for the tournament were left in uncertainty, showing organizational weaknesses that affect both players and fans.

Despite the disruption, Morocco remains committed to delivering the competition later this year. The Atlas Lions will aim to defend their continental crown on home soil, while federations across Africa will regroup and adjust their plans for the new dates.

The postponement adds to a growing list of scheduling issues within CAF, raising questions about planning and governance.

For now, the focus shifts to October, when the 2026 Futsal AFCON is finally expected to take place in the Moroccan capital.
