The Danish Government has unveiled proposals to ban burkas in schools and universities across the nation.

The new measure forms part of Copenhagen's ongoing campaign against what officials call "parallel societies" within the country.

Full-face coverings including burkas and niqabs have been banned in public areas since 2018.

And the new scheme would bring schools and universities under the same restrictions.

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, whose left-leaning administration retook office in June, is championing the ban.

The policy aims to address communities of migrants who have failed to integrate into Danish society.

Danish authorities have warned of "parallel societies" - urban neighbourhoods where non-Western migrants make up more than half the population.

Individuals who breach the existing public ban multiple times can be fined up to 10,000 kroner (£1,300).

Burka

The planned extension to the burka ban was first reported by Danish outlet Berlingske, citing the Immigration Ministry.

"The Government will present a number of legislative proposals that were not adopted before the election. This includes, among other things, the bill on strengthened efforts against parallel societies and negative social control," the ministry later said.

Denmark maintains one of the strictest immigration and asylum policies in Europe, a model which Britain's Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has openly tried to replicate.

Both left- and right-wing politicians have treated migration as a paramount concern.

A burka

During the height of the 2015 refugee crisis, Danish authorities admitted significantly fewer asylum seekers than its neighbours Sweden and Germany.

And anyone whose applications failed received no state financial assistance.

The country also maintains a "ghetto" law, which lets authorities forcibly remove migrants from areas where foreign-born residents make up too much of the population.

Another piece of legislation, the "jewellery" rule, allows officials to confiscate valuable possessions from asylum seekers to offset their accommodation expenses.

The burka crackdown comes just weeks after Denmark vowed to ban the Islamic call to prayer under plans to combat creeping "Islamisation".

Morten Bodskov, of the Social Democrats party, confirmed the newly-elected Danish Government would pick up a probe into whether such a prohibition would be legal.

He told Danish news outlet Ritzau: “The call to prayer should not be heard over Danish rooftops.

“It has no place in Denmark, and you shouldn’t be in any doubt whether you’ve ended up in a suburb of Islamabad when you walk around Denmark.”

The minister further said a gradual "Islamisation" was "taking up too much of the public space" in the Scandinavian nation.
