Royal watchers promptly shared screenshots of the mistake across social media platforms.

Journalist Richard Eden addressed the slip on X, writing: "A rare error in the Court Circular, issued by Buckingham Palace.

"It is the Duke of Edinburgh, not his son, the Earl of Wessex, who is Colonel of the Scots Guards."

James does not hold any military appointments, making the attribution particularly strange to those familiar with royal protocol.

Prince Edward received the prestigious appointment from King Charles in 2024, taking over the ceremonial role from the Duke of Kent.

His uncle had served as Colonel of the Scots Guards for half a century before stepping aside.
