Brutal embarrassment for ex-Squad firebrand Cori Bush after learning fate in desperate comeback bid for Congress

By SAMANTHA LOREN, US POLITICAL REPORTER Published: 19:24, 5 August 2026 | Updated: 19:24, 5 August 2026 One of America's most controversial progressive lawmakers saw her political comeback attempt collapse Tuesday night.  Representative Wesley Bell throttled former Representative Cori Bush in Missouri's 1st Congressional District Democratic primary.  The race was dominated by a fierce battle over Israel, AIPAC, and the influence of outside groups.   Before the election was called, Bush delivered a pointed political verdict, declaring, 'He is actually, in my opinion, a Republican.'  With nearly all ballots counted, Bell defeated Bush 51 percent to Bush's 46 percent, marking a second defeat for the progressive firebrand and ending her hopes of returning to Congress. At the center of the bitter contest was a fight that had followed Bush since the aftermath of the October 7, 2023 terror attacks in Israel, her outspoken criticism of Israeli government policies and her calls for a ceasefire in Gaza. During the campaign, AIPAC-linked groups became a major force against her. The United Democracy Project (UDP), a super PAC connected to AIPAC, spent millions of dollars supporting Bell and opposing Bush, with reports indicating roughly $3 million in outside spending backing Bell's side of the contest. Bush entered Congress in 2020 after defeating longtime Democratic Congressman William Lacy Clay, rising as a grassroots activist determined to challenge the political establishment. She quickly became one of the most recognizable members of 'The Squad,' building a national profile around policing, racial justice, healthcare, abortion rights and foreign policy. That national attention became both her strength and her weakness.  Bush argued that her criticism of Israel's conduct in Gaza and opposition to AIPAC-backed efforts made her a target, while critics accused her of focusing more on national activism than the everyday concerns of St. Louis voters. During the 2024 campaign, opponents questioned her constituent services and argued she was better known nationally than locally. Bell capitalized on those concerns, presenting himself as a more accessible Democrat focused on public safety and district priorities. Bush also faced controversy over her support for the 'defund the police' movement and her campaign's spending on private security after receiving threats. Critics said the issue raised questions about her views on policing, while Bush defended the expenses as necessary for her safety. A later Justice Department investigation into campaign security spending became another political challenge, though she denied wrongdoing and no criminal charges were filed. The Israel-Gaza conflict became the defining issue of her political career. The fight intensified as Bush accused AIPAC and other pro-Israel groups of using outside money to defeat lawmakers who opposed their views.  During the primary, AIPAC-linked groups spent millions supporting Bell, while Bush argued the spending was retaliation for her Gaza stance. Bell's supporters said the race was ultimately about leadership, representation and local priorities. After her defeat, Bush blamed outside spending and targeted AIPAC in a fiery concession speech, saying: 'AIPAC, I'm coming to tear your kingdom down.' Supporters said she was exposing the influence of money in politics, while critics argued she failed to address the local issues that drove voters away. For a politician who built her career challenging the establishment, Bush's defeat marked a dramatic reversal — as voters chose Bell's more traditional, results-focused approach over her brand of national progressive activism.
