Nick Cammett / Getty Images Share articleCleveland Browns coach Todd Monken said Friday that while he’d like to name a starting quarterback before the team opens training camp in late July, it’s still too early for any decisions. Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders are the primary competitors for the job. Watson missed all of last season while recovering from a twice-torn right Achilles tendon, while Sanders started the final seven games of his rookie season under former coach Kevin Stefanski. With the offense new in structure and in personnel at almost every position, Monken said he’s hoping a clear winner emerges. But, despite one report indicating Watson is the favorite, Monken reiterated in an interview on WKRK-FM in Cleveland that he’s not ready to make a call on the starter just yet. “It’s my job to let it play out,” Monken said. The Browns held a three-day voluntary minicamp ahead of last week’s draft. In the one practice open to reporters, Watson was usually first in line as the quarterbacks rotated through drills, but Monken said the practice script called for Sanders to take more total reps. After that first practice last week, Monken said the order of quarterback reps will continue to change as the Browns go forward. “I’m not there yet, so I can’t say (there’s a leader),” Monken said during an in-studio appearance on “The Ken Carman Show.” “We’ve been on the field three days.” The Browns’ first organized team activity practice is scheduled for May 19. The team can have up to 10 OTA practices ahead of a mid-June mandatory minicamp that wraps up the offseason program. Cleveland added sixth-round rookie Taylen Green to the quarterback room during last week’s draft. For now, Watson, Sanders and 2025 third-round pick Dillon Gabriel are participating in the second phase of the team’s offseason program that includes offensive installation meetings and drill work on the field, but not in competitive situations. When OTA practices begin, one per week is open to reporters. The Browns didn’t add a veteran to the group in March. In February, Monken said he believed there would be an “open competition” throughout the spring and possibly the summer, but he wouldn’t set a firm deadline for a decision. What he said Friday matched his previous stance of letting the players decide who plays and giving all involved opportunities, but not equal reps, as the competition progresses. Spot the pattern.
