Arthur Fery, the last Briton standing in the singles events, shunned the show venues to make Court 18 his Camelot. His epic comeback to defeat Zizou Bergs was more worthy of Merlin the magician, as he somehow retrieved two service breaks when heading for seemingly certain defeat to set up a thrilling five-set victory: 2-6, 7-5, 2-6, 7-6, 7-6. Trailing 2-1 and 4-1 in the fourth, Fery flung his racket at his chair, frustration spilling over that a mid-game momentum shift had not been maintained. Improbably, he fought back, winning the fourth on a tie-break. He was a break down in the decider too, yet still somehow conjured the win, literally shedding blood for the cause. Several medical time-outs were required for a nosebleed, the last with the match approaching its climax. Fery’s courage means the British flag still flies in singles during the second Wimbledon week. Wild-card entry Fery is the last Briton standing at SW19 Credit: Ben Whitley/PA For three hours, the combination of a classy Belgian opponent and chronic nosebleed looked an impediment too far in pursuit of round four. Fery’s revival began when showcasing more variety than a night at the Palladium during Bruce Forsyth’s heyday. An array of slices and impressive net game seemed to befuddle his opponent when he impressively levelled for 1-1 and 2-2, the crowd erupting at the promise of a British win. It had taken 68 minutes for Fery to make the spectators believe, a break of serve at 2-1 in the second set proving a momentary turning point in what had hitherto been a one-sided match. “All aboard the Fery,” one fan shouted. “Fery’s coming home,” was another. At his best, he looked more like a speedboat. Fery was severely impeded by medical time-outs; his last was at game point when 5-4 down in the fifth. Many players will appreciate the suggestion they might get a nosebleed by flying up the rankings. In Fery’s case it is an occupation hazard, the chronic issue in need of resolution to ensure it does not disrupt career progress. It was an untimely distraction as Fery tamely lost the opening set. He scurried back with a stunning break of serve when 6-5 up in the second, the precursor for a more unlikely fightback later before another nosebleed occurred at the most inopportune moment. What character he showed. Despite Bergs regaining the ascendancy in the fifth, Fery did not wilt as the son of French parents put Zizou in the shade by claiming the match tie-break, falling to the turf in exhausted elation after keeping the home fires burning. It shows how much he wants this. I kept watching his demeanour and his actions and I could see how much he wants this, but he was also able to concentrate and focus on what he needed to do. It was the confidence and belief that allowed Arthur Fery to win. “Because he isn’t the tallest guy in the world, he does have an advantage on grass because he has a low centre of gravity. It is about doing the best with what God gave you.” Fery will be back in action on Monday Credit: Ben Whitley/PA 7:25PM Fery on his nosebleeds Link copied to clipboard “It is a problem I am going to address. It has happened before but it’s not that common. “It happened at times today when I didn’t want to stop, when momentum was with me. I know it annoying for the opponent. It gives me some extra time to rest sometimes I guess.” The match was stopped three times for Fery nosebleeds Credit: Eddie Mulholland for The Telegraph 7:21PM Father and son celebrate Link copied to clipboard Arthur Fery celebrates victory with his dad Loic Credit: Andrew Matthews/PA 7:11PM Fery reacts Link copied to clipboard “No words for it, honestly. I don’t know what is going on right now. It will take time to digest it. So many first times after this match. I’m just so glad. “I just tried to stay in the match, just backing myself as a competitor. I was down for pretty much the whole match, managed to scramble back from two breaks and 4-1 in the fifth, and just tried to put up as much of a fight as I could.” 7:03PM The only minor blow for Fery... Link copied to clipboard He won’t be playing on Court 18 in the fourth round. The Bergs serve was dominant in set one but has been under continued pressure ever since. “Ferys coming home,” was the chant from the crowd. Not sure that will catch on, but the atmosphere is building.  4:00PM BREAKING: Serena Williams pulls out of Wimbledon doubles Link copied to clipboard The most talked-about tennis comeback is over for now after news filters through that Serena will not play her doubles match with sister Venus later today because of the knee injury sustained on Tuesday evening. 3:57PM Fery 2-6, 7-5 Bergs* Link copied to clipboard Fery races to 0-30. Bergs gets the double break. 2:38PM A recurring issue for Fery Link copied to clipboard We all want full-blooded performances from the British players, but this is becoming a recurring issue for Fery. Not sure how you prepare for a chronic nosebleed. It must be psychologically tough knowing it is going to happen and being helpless to prevent it.  2:33PM Fery nosebleed stops play Link copied to clipboard Short delay to this game as Fery is having a nosebleed. Work to do for Fery.  2:28PM Fery* 1-2 Bergs Link copied to clipboard Aggressive slice backhand by Bergs and Fery has a look at a pass but nets, 15-30. Bergs then forces Fery to come into the net and lifts a delicate lob over the Briton’s head, two break points. Backhand by Fery travels long and Bergs breaks. 2:25PM Fery 1-1 Bergs* Link copied to clipboard With his backward cap and languid style, Bergs doesn’t lack for confidence and belief. He is already showing some nice touches and feel around the court which could make Fery nervous. Bergs holds to 30 after a deft volley is too good for Fery. 2:23PM ‘All aboard the Fery’ Link copied to clipboard “All aboard the Fery!” is the cry from the spectators as he holds his first service game. Expect more such puns as the match progresses. Every seat taken on Court 18 and Fery makes a solid start as he gets to 40-30 but Bergs takes him to deuce with a cross-court backhand pass. After seven minutes, Fery eventually comes through with a forehand winner. 2:07PM Health issue for Fery Link copied to clipboard An odd feature of Fery’s grass-court season has been a spate of nosebleeds. During his second-round match on Court 18, part of which was watched by the Princess of Wales, Fery had a nosebleed, as he had during his run to the Queen’s Club quarter-finals last month. “There’s a plan in place for after the tournament to have a look at that and try to get that sorted,” said Alex Ward, the Lawn Tennis Association national coach who works closely with Fery. “We’re aware they’ve been happening in the last few matches. We’re not entirely sure the cause of it. “It’s probably something to do with being on the match court, in that heightened environment, but it’s going to be hopefully sorted out post-[Wimbledon].” 2:04PM Fery shuns Wimbledon show court to play in front of 750 people Link copied to clipboard You would assume that being the only Briton left would guarantee a match on Centre or No 1. But after success on Court 18 on Thursday, Fery has requested the same court again.  “Arthur likes Court 18 and had a great match out there last time and putting him back out there fitted in with overall scheduling considerations,” an All England Club spokesman said. Of all the 19 British players to walk on to a court in this year’s Championships, only Katie Swan has been afforded the chance to play on one of Wimbledon’s show courts, playing on No 1 Court for her second-round defeat by Madison Keys. Link copied to clipboard Hello and welcome to coverage from Wimbledon as the last Briton standing in the singles draw attempts to reach the fourth round. Arthur Fery, who received a wild card into the tournament, takes on Belgium’s Zizou Bergs on Court 18. Fery reached the third round of a grand slam for the first time with a four-set victory over Otto Virtanen on Thursday and finds himself as the only home hope remaining. “Yeah, I mean, I wouldn’t say it’s pressure,” he said. “If anything, for me personally it’s a good thing. Obviously for the Brits in general, it’s not as good. We’d love to have as many Brits as possible in the third round. There’s no pressure attached to it. I play for myself. Yeah, I want to win just for myself.” Fery will be the underdog against Bergs, who is ranked at a career-high 37 after winning the title in Eastbourne last weekend but still represents a decent draw given the possible alternatives. The two players have never played at tour level but played six years ago in Bratislava. “He’s obviously a great player,” Fery added. “He’s improved a lot since then. So have I. “I’m looking forward to the match. I’m playing well. Whoever I’m facing, I’m confident in myself. I’m sure it’s going to be a great match.” Victory over Bergs would see Fery break into the top 100 for the first time and become British number two.
