King Charles' visit to the US is set to go ahead in the wake of an assassination attempt on Donald Trump , but with "adjustments", according to royal sources. Royal sources suggested the State Visit is expected to go ahead as planned, but Buckingham Palace and the White House would make "some operational adjustments to a few elements of the programme". A senior palace source said the decision to alter the programme was made on official advice at emergency meetings scheduled in the aftermath of the Washington Hilton shooting. It is expected that two engagements throughout the four day schedule would be altered. The source added that the King and Queen were still "very much looking forward" to their visit to the United States and would "keep calm and carry on". A Buckingham Palace spokesman said: "Following discussions on both sides of the Atlantic through the day, and acting on advice of Government, we can confirm the State Visit by Their Majesties will proceed as planned. The King and Queen are most grateful to all those who have worked at pace to ensure this remains the case and are looking forward to the Visit getting underway tomorrow." It comes after a gunman opened fire during the annual White House Correspondents' Dinner in Washington. The suspect, identified as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, was armed with guns and knives when he stormed the lobby of the Washington Hilton just minutes after the glitzy event got underway. Video footage shared by Trump showed the suspectrunning through a metal scanner outside the ballroom as he rushed past security staff. In the ballroom, guests dived under tables as Secret Service agents raced to protect the President, First Lady and other members of the administration. Trump was rushed off stage, appearing to trip and fall down amid the chaos of the incident, while his Vice President JD Vance was grabbed by the jacket and dragged to safety. One officer was shot but the bullet was prevented from doing major damage by a bulletproof vest. Officials have said he is recovering. The gunman was tackled to the ground and not injured, but was evaluated at hospital according to police. He was taken into custody and is expected in court on Monday. The decision for Charles' state visit to go ahead comes amid warnings from security experts that the King is at risk simply by standing beside Trump after the latest assassination attempt on the President. Ex-FBI agent Jonathan Gillam said he is astonished a potential assassin was allowed to get near the President once again in what is the third attempt on Trump's life in the last two years. "There has been better security at events like the Superbowl. You cannot get a bag in bigger than a purse. I cannot for the life of me understand how this keeps happening," he said. Meanwhile former British army officer and security expert Hamish de Bretton-Gordon, who served with the Royal Tank Regiment and as head of chemical and biological counter-terrorism, said: "The threat is to Trump. "Security around the King is always very strong and is constantly reviewed as threats change, which then alters the security stance. But the King will be more concerned about being near Trump than Trump will be about being near the King. There is a risk by default and a risk by association. Especially in the States, the main risk comes from a lone wolf gunman in a society run by guns. This man did not get anywhere close, but the last assassination attempt tas almost inexplicable, he got so close." The closest an attempted assassin came to killing Trump was July 13, 2024, when a bullet grazed the president's right ear during a rally. Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, fired eight times with a rifle from a roof overlooking the Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. He failed to assassinate Trump but killed another attendee Corey Comperatore, 50, a former volunteer fire chief who was in the crowd and shielding his family. Two others were seriously injured. The gunman was killed by a Secret Service sniper.
