Boy, 3, left 'absolutely over the moon' as council surprises him with replacement for missing toy bins

A three-year-old has been left delighted after local council officials stepped in following the theft of his beloved toy bins.

Arthur, from Middlesborough, was devastated when his miniature bin collection disappeared from outside his family home.

His mother Rosie took to social media in hopes of tracking down the missing toys, posting an appeal for any information about their whereabouts.

The plea caught the eye of Acklam ward Labour councillor Luke Henman, who decided to take action.

Cllr Henman subsequently liaised with Middlesbrough Council employees to organise a set of replacement bins for the youngster, setting in motion a heartwarming surprise.

The new bins were delivered to Arthur's school nursery at Kader Primary School last week, but council staff had arranged something extra special for the occasion.

Rather than simply handing over the replacement toys, officials organised for a genuine refuse vehicle to arrive at the school gates.

Brandon Osborne, a Waste and Recycling Officer with Middlesbrough Council, drove the waggon to the nursery and took time to speak with Arthur and his classmates about his work in waste collection.

The visit allowed the three-year-old to share the exciting moment with his fellow pupils, turning what could have been a simple delivery into a fun educational experience for the entire class.

Arthur's reaction to the surprise visit was one of pure joy, according to his mother.

"It was a lovely surprise for Arthur and he was absolutely over the moon," Rosie said.

She added: "It was nice that he was able to share the moment with his friends."

The youngster particularly enjoyed exploring the refuse waggon during the visit.

"He had a whale of a time getting into the waggon and has happily played with his new bins at home," his mother explained.

The experience proved memorable not just for Arthur but for all the children present, who were given the opportunity to learn about waste collection firsthand from a working professional.

Councillor Peter Gavigan, the Council's Executive member for Environment and Sustainability, was also present at the school to witness Arthur receiving his new bins.

"It was great to be able to visit the school and see Arthur presented with his new bins," Cllr Gavigan remarked.

"All of the children seemed really excited and Brandon in particular should be congratulated for taking the time to explain his role and the uses of the different bins."

Middlesbrough Council is set to launch weekly food waste collections this summer as part of a nationwide initiative aimed at boosting recycling rates.

Additionally, paper and cardboard will be collected separately from other recyclable materials, a move designed to minimise contamination and improve overall recycling volumes.
